Ooh
man, what a leap forward this album was! In many ways too. The Royal
Scam is the album where Steely Dan truly find their edge; the signature
jazzy sound that they'll carry on for their next few albums and become
incredibly well known for. The Royal Scam is definitely the most artsy
out of their famed trilogy of albums (This, Aja, Gaucho) and shoots for a
much more rough sound than something like Katy Lied. Right off the bat
it's more immediately gripping, being filled to the brim with vibrant
and fun instrumentation and some seriously great melodies. The jazzy
instrumentation is still there, but pretty much completely revamped to
an almost prog-like sound; and I think that really makes for one of
their most memorable and exciting albums to date. It might even be my
favourite album from the band, even after hearing Aja.
Favourite
tracks: The Caves Of Altamira, Don't Take Me Alive, The Royal Scam, The
Fez, Kid Charlemagne, Haitian Divorce, Sign In Stranger.
