Jon Lord (Deep Purple) - Sarabande (1976)

Year: October 1976 (CD 1987)
Label: Line Records (Germany), LICD 9.00124 O
Style: Modern Classical, Progressive Rock
Country: Leicester, England (9 June 1941 - 16 July 2012)
Time: 50:06
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 265 Mb

Typically, when an artist branches out from their current band for a solo outing, it is to “prove” something. Wishing to be seen as more than just “one of the guys in the band,” they want to take an excursion into the studio, hoping to demonstrate to the loyal legion of fans that they have something different to offer. This is especially true when they are not the main songwriter in said group. Jon Lord, a founding member and former member of Deep Purple, successfully found a way of sounding relevant with Sarabande, his second solo outing, without losing the respect of Purple’s fan base.
Anyone expecting a Deep Purple-sounding album will be disappointed. In this case, that may be a good thing. If you have an appreciation for majestic, brain-jarring compositions of pure musicianship, Sarabande may be the album for you. With the Hungarian Philharmonic as his accompaniment, in addition to an array of other studio musicians, including a pre-Police guitarist Andy Summers, Lord offers up eight songs of pure musical, majestic bliss. To some, it may appear Lord is just being pretentious; but to those with open ears, he is merely demonstrating that his talents reach beyond his years with Deep Purple.
In a way, Sarabande almost resembles the soundtrack, to one of Hollywood’s old-time classics, ala Lawrence of Arabia or Ben-Hur. That’s what I love about it. It is truly grand on all levels. With the musicianship and the swooping, epic-like execution of each track, there is not a moment on this mesmerizing album where the listener will fail to be impressed. Combining classical music with jazz, blues, and straight forward rock, it is an ambitious piece of work that, for the most part, succeeds, thanks to the genius of Lord’s capabilities.

Jon Lord (Deep Purple) - Gemini Suite (1971)

Year: October 1971 (CD 1987)
Label: Line Records (Germany), LICD 9.00122 O
Style: Modern Classical, Progressive Rock
Country: Leicester, England (9 June 1941 - 16 July 2012)
Time: 47:24
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 208 Mb

After the 1969 classical / rock fusion Concerto for Group and Orchestra, Jon Lord was commissioned to write a follow-up. This was Gemini Suite, five long movements inspired by the members of Deep Purple, and performed live in September 1970 at the Royal Festival Hall with The Light Music Society Orchestra (the album of the concert was issued in 1993 as Gemini Suite Live). Jon Lord then recorded it in the studio as his first solo project in 1971, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold and soloists drawn from the rock world. Gemini Suite was an important step for Lord and led to albums such as Windows (1974) and Sarabande (1976).
The album was originally released in Europe and America in 1971 with different cover artwork. The 1973 US reissue featured a third version of the cover artwork. In 1983 the album was re-released on LP in Germany and four years later also for the first time on CD.

Deep Purple - Rapture Of The Deep [20th Anniversary 2CD] (2005)

Year: 24 October 2005 (CD Aug 29, 2025)
Label: Ear Music (Germany), 0220730EMU
Style: Hard Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 59:52, 21:19
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 450, 168 Mb

Like Bananas, the album received generally positive reviews from critics and fans. The album peaked on Billboard's US Top Independent Albums chart at position No. 43. In the US, the album sold 2500 copies during the first week. In the UK, the album sold 3500 copies during the first week and 1200 copies during the week after. It also made the top 20 in several European charts. The title track "Rapture of the Deep" was released as a promo single in 2005. It is the fourth studio album from Deep Purple since Steve Morse joined the band in 1994 and the second to feature veteran keyboardist Don Airey. The album was produced by Michael Bradford who also produced the band's previous release, Bananas.
The album's title relates to an alternative name for the nitrogen narcosis psychological condition capable of affecting deep sea divers. Of the title, bassist Roger Glover said: "I like it because it's got opposites, a duality there, and I'm always fond of that. If you're a scuba diver and you dive down below three atmospheres or 110, 120 feet, something like that, you have excess nitrogen in your blood, and it's called nitrogen narcosis. It's a known danger. And what it does to you, is it makes you really happy, like being drunk. The danger is you're in rapture, you're in a state of pure joy and bliss and at one with the world, and you love being down there and you want to be part of it, so you take your mask off and die."

Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) - Songs In The Key Of Rock [Japanise Ed.] (2003)

Year: 9 June 2003 (CD May 21, 2003)
Label: Canyon International (Japan), PCCY-01650
Style: Hard Rock, Garage Rock
Country: Cannock, Staffordshire, England (21 August 1951)
Time: 53:38
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 392 Mb

Shug has been bigging this up around the rock press as his return to rock, the album his fans have been wanting him to make, how he's rediscovered his passion for The Rawk, and so on, ad nauseum. Which is complete and utter tosh. For as the title indicates, this is in fact Glenn's return to the glory days of Trapeze, fusing his love of rock, Stevie Wonder and funk, aligned to some sweet melodies, and above all else, the voice.
'Tis true, there are rockers, but they are actually the weaker numbers, especially the John Bonham tribute which veers sharply over the line between tribute and parody. However, faults are few and delights are many. So let's begin with the epic power funk ballad which will have grown men weeping into their beer, and women going weak at the knees. It's called "Written All Over Your Face", it lasts over eight minutes and it is a truly sublime piece of music which you absolutely have to own. No ifs, no buts, no maybes. Go get it. Now.
Right, you're back. Good. There's more top quality funk on "Get You Stoned", driven along by the powerful drumming of Red Hot Chili Pepper, Chad Smith. If there was any justice in this world, "Courageous" would be all over US radio, and a hit would be born. Horrifically catchy, I have found myself trying to hit notes that have been beyond me for 20 years. Nice.
The wistful, introspection of "The Truth" hits home hard, and is another melodic masterpiece. There's no indication of which guitarist plays which solo, so props have to go to both long standing alumni JJ Marsh, and the much travelled Jeff Kollman. Nice to see that Glenn plays bass all the way through and backing vocals are handled by former Santana bod, Alex Ligertwood.
This is by far, the best piece of solo work Glenn has produced in a long time with perhaps only 3 tracks out of 11 failing to pass muster. So, if you can get past the horrendous cover art, and yearn for the days when music got you higher, then this is essential. Oh, and yes there is a coda.

Glenn Hughes - Building The Machine [Japanese Ed.] (2001)

Year: 24 September 2001 (CD Sep 21, 2001)
Label: Nippon Crown Co. (Japan), CRCL-4788
Style: Hard Rock, Blues Rock
Country: Cannock, Staffordshire, England (21 August 1951)
Time: 60:35
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 444 Mb

Building The Machine has a similar feel to Hughes’ previous album, 2000’s Return of Crystal Karma. Many of the songs have a hard rock sound with a funk edge, although the funk aspect is somewhat toned down on this album and the songs are more driven by guitar riffs than bass lines. This album marks the fourth collaboration between Hughes and longtime guitarist and co-songwriter JJ Marsh. The album also features contributions from Hughes’ regular drummer of the period Gary Ferguson, keyboardists Vince DiCola and John Beasley and guitarist Pat Travers, who duets with Hughes on the Rare Earth cover I Just Want To Celebrate. Bobby Kimball of Toto provides backing vocals on two of the tracks. The track High Ball Shooter is a newly recorded version of the Deep Purple song, which originally featured on the album Stormbringer. The Japanese version of the album includes the track Cosmic Spell, which was written by Hughes and Pat Travers. The opening track Can’t Stop The Flood also kicked off Hughes’ 2004 live album Soulfully Live in the City of Angels and often frequents his set-lists.

Jon Lord (Deep Purple) - Windows [Japanese Ed.] (1974)

Year: September 1974 (CD 1994)
Label: Tochiba-EMI (Japan), TOCP-8442
Style: Symphonic Rock, Progressive Rock
Country: Leicester, England (9 June 1941 - 16 July 2012)
Time: 48:50
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 271 Mb

Looking back across hard rock history, stylistic parallels with certain aspects of classical music’s more bombastic incarnations are unavoidable. The full-tilt Sturm und Drang of Wagner, the opening riff of Beethoven’s Fifth (surely the allegro con brio Smoke On The Water of symphonic fortissimo) clearly presage rock’s essential elements. But back when rock was young, Elton still Reg, and Jon Lord endeavouring to fuse two largely disparate genres into harmonious union, his noble experiment couldn’t have been greeted with more horror by classicists than if he were attempting to fashion a hybrid of Jeff Goldblum and a fly.
Pop, as it still remained, was way more open to bold progression. Incredibly, record-buyers stoically avoided no less than three Deep Purple albums beforeConcerto For Group And Orchestra (technically attributed to ‘Jon Lord With Deep Purple’) finally afforded the band their first UK chart placing. Encouraged – validated even – Lord persevered. 1972’s Purps-inspired, Beeb-commissioned Gemini Suite with the LSO and Malcolm Arnold was similarly well received, but then came ’74’s Windows (co-composed with Moog-handed Eberhard Schoener).
Comprised of two extended pieces for a rock septet (that included David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on vocals) and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, complete with complementary sopranos, it was experimental and ambitious, yet sadly a bridge too far.

Jon Lord With The Hoochie Coochie Men - Live In The Basement (2003)

Year: December 9, 2003 (CD 2007)
Label: Edel Entertaiment (Germany), 0186228ERE
Style: Blues Rock, Electric Blues
Country: Leicester, England (9 June 1941 - 16 July 2012)
Time: 39:33
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 275 Mb

In 2003 Jon also returned to his beloved R&B and blues heritage to record an album of standards in Sydney, with Australia's Jimmy Barnes, entitled Live in the Basement, by Jon Lord and the Hoochie Coochie Men. Lord was also happy to support the Sam Buxton Sunflower Jam Healing Trust and in September 2006, performed at a star-studded event to support the charity led by Ian Paice's wife, Jacky (twin sister of Lord's wife Vicky). Featured artists on stage with Lord included Paul Weller, Robert Plant, Phil Manzanera, Ian Paice and Bernie Marsden.
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Lord#with_The_Hoochie_Coochie_Men)
First years of new Millennium Jon Lord met with his new low-profile band (of old guys, including bassist Bob Daisley) Hoochie Coochie Men. No jokes, they play blues standards, using vintage keyboards, in a traditions of British blues of late 60-s.
From band's name and cover art you can perfectly recognize, what kind of sound you will find inside. Guys play enthusiastic, but extremely simple classic blues tunes, with harmonica, some characteristic Lord's Hammond passages ( too much of cliche) and .... it's all.
Musically there are myriads of blues musicians, playing that music better. Even in rare moments, when band goes to heavier blues rock, the music sounds as played by good suburb pub band. Guest vocalist is terrible though.

Ian Gillan & Tony Iommi - Who Cares [2CD] (2012)

Year: 13 July 2012 (CD Jul 13, 2012)
Label: Ear Music (Europe), 0207592ERE
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: England
Time: 47:04, 48:29
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 367, 356 Mb

CD1:
01. Out of My Mind (WhoCares) – This originally appeared on the 2 track “single” CD from last year.  It’s unchanged as far as I know.  It’s a great new track from Tony & Ian.   The band on the track is stellar.  Tony Iommi, Ian Gillan, Jason Newsted, Nicko McBran, Jon Lord, & Linde Linstrom.  Makes me wish this band recorded more than just this one song.
02. Zero the Hero (Black Sabbath) – A lift from the 1983 Black Sabbath album Born Again.  A great old track.  Although if I had my choice of track to lift from the Born Again album to include, I would have picked “Hot Line”.  Oh well, still cool to see something from Born Again here.
03. Trashed (Ian Gillan) – Back in 2006, Ian Gillan put out an album called “Gillan’s Inn”, which existed to celebrate his (then) 40th anniversary in the music biz.  He re-recorded a bunch of tracks from his past.  To represent his time in Black Sabbath, he chose Trashed, and re-recorded it – with Tony Iommi on guitar.  Also on the track are Roger Glover & Ian Paice.
04. Get Away (Ian Gillan w/Michalis Rakintzis) – Originally recorded by Ian Gillan in 1993.  Even though the liner notes say who this is, I don’t know who it is!   Definitely one of the slower, more eclectic songs from the overall track listing here for sure.  Definitely not “metal” sounding at all.  Has a very catchy sounding vocal chorus, which makes the song work very well for me.
05. Slip Away (Tony Iommi w/Glenn Hughes) – This is one of the “extra” tracks from Tony’s 2005 solo album, Fused.  This one in particular was the one that was the hardest to get, as it was only available back in 2005 from the then online music retailer, real.com.  It was never available on CD anywhere – until now.   If you liked the Fused album, you should check this out for sure.
06. Don’t Hold Me Back (Gillan) – A song Ian wrote back in 1992 inbetween Deep Purple stints.  The liner notes say this was written for his wife Bron, who at the time was going to have major heart surgery.  He calls it “one of the most intimate moments of his life, expressed in song”.   Has a 90’s version of his old “shriek”, which I thought was last heard on the Born again album.  :)
07. She Thinks It’s a Crime (Ian Gillan) – This track comes from Ian’s 2009 solo album, “One Eye to Morocco”.  This track in particular was originally released on the 7 inch vinyl version ONLY.  First time on a CD anywhere.  The track doesn’t jump out at me at all musically.  Pretty bland track –  not one of my favorites on this collection.
08. Easy Come, Easy Go (Repo Depo) – This track comes from the project Ian was working on right before he rejoined Deep Purple for the “Battle Rages On” album.  Repo Depo was the name of the band.  It has never been released anywhere before in any format.  According to the liner notes, the only known copy was on a monitor cassette tape Ian had – it was brought forward and remixed in 2012 for this collection.  Nice track.  The guitar sound reminds me a bit of Tony Iommi in places.
09. Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple) – This version comes from the live Deep Purple album, “Live at the Royal Albert Hall”, and Ian shares lead vocal duties on this version with Ronnie James Dio.   Interesting hearing these two former Black Sabbath vocalists sing together on the Deep Purple Chestnut.
