Soft Machine - Seven (1973)

Year: October 1973 (CD 2007)
Label: Sony BMG Music Entertainment (Europe), 82876872922
Style: Jazz Rock, Progressive Rock, Canterbury Scene
Country: Canterbury, England
Time: 43:15
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 263 Mb

This was the first Soft Machine album I bought and nearly the last. Not that it isn’t soothing in a sleepy sort of way, but it wasn’t at all the madcap sonic adventure I was expecting. With time, of course, I understood that the original quest changed after the departures of Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt, with Mike Ratledge leading the band into jazzier terrain much as Gong did under the stewardship of Pierre Moerlen. From the perspective of Six, little had changed—or needed to, really. The mesmerizing keyboard patterns, mutated saxophone/oboe solos, superlative drumming and steady bass shift every few minutes like an audio kaleidoscope, which is pleasant enough. It’s generally a calmer and more peaceful record than most jazz fusion albums from the period, and there’s little difference between the songs written by Ratledge and Karl Jenkins, giving Seven a consistent feel from beginning to end. Is it the first Soft Machine album you need to own? In my experience, obviously not (they did number these for a reason). If you’re going to buy seven Soft Machine albums, however, here you are. Highlights (to my ears) include Tarabos, Down the Road and the combination of Snodland and Penny Hitch (the songs tend to merge into one another). Carol Ann is also very pretty. That said, the album doesn’t really have standout sections; it’s conceived as an organic whole that flows from the shared musical sensibilities of its four members. It’s not their best album, but it might be their softest so far.

Aerosmith - Rock In A Hard Place [Japanese Ed.] (1982)

Year: August 1, 1982 (CD Nov 21, 1996)
Label: Sony Music (Japan), SRCS 9052
Style: Hard Rock
Country: Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.
Time: 40:17
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 280 Mb

It is the only Aerosmith album not to feature guitarist Joe Perry, following his departure from the band in 1979. Fellow guitarist Brad Whitford also left during the recording in 1981. The band spent $1.5 million on the recording of this album, which saw them reunited with producer Jack Douglas.
Aerosmith had released six studio albums during the 1970s. But as the decade concluded, multiple problems arose. Guitarist Joe Perry had left the band in 1979 after incidents at the World Series of Rock in Cleveland, Ohio and was replaced by Jimmy Crespo. Meanwhile, Steven Tyler's drug abuse increased. After recording the single "Lightning Strikes", guitarist Brad Whitford also left Aerosmith in 1981 and was replaced by Rick Dufay.
Guitarist Dufay recalls the difficulty in completing the album in a 2008 interview: "They tried to make that album for two years but Steven couldn't finish stuff and they had trouble with their original producer but once they got Jack and me on board, we were just pushing it. When we went down to Florida, Steven was way too fucked up to do anything, he was nodding off when he was trying to write lyrics and I said to Jack that we had to get him out and get him together. It took about two or three months and we pretty much nursed him back to health. We got him off the hard stuff, sat in the sun and had some laughs and I established a bond with him. It's pretty well documented on the Behind the Music show. He was pretty sick and I just took care of him and even had to wipe his ass for him!!

This is an absolute masterpiece!. For those who love (like me) progressive fusion jazz/rock will need to get your hands on this masterpiece. Without a question the first few MAHAV albums are some of the most aggressive and mind stretching albums of all time. The MAHAV's output from the Trident Studio days are to treasure in your collection for sure. Once again here we get a fantastic collaboration of musical instumentation and musical ideas. John McLaughlin's guitar solos are simply killer and being back by Hammer (keyboards), Laird (bass), Cobham (drums) and Goodman on violin makes this a real keeper. At times "Birds Of Fire" identifies a quasi - KING CRIMSON feel with lots of originality and musical sophistication. If you have high blood pressure, you may not want to plug in this album to your stereo. Absolutely stunning musicanship and one of the best fusion/prog albums your money can buy... Even a Miles Davis tune to boot.

Aerosmith - Night In The Ruts [Japanese Ed. BSCD2] (1979)

Year: November 16, 1979 (CD Oct 9, 2013)
Label: Sony Music (Japan), SICP 30373
Style: Hard Rock
Country: Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.
Time: 35:43
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 267 Mb

The title of Aerosmith's 1979 album Night in the Ruts was more than just a clever spoonerism for "right in the nuts." It encapsulated the dire state of affairs for the drug-addled, feuding rockers, whose underrated sixth LP was nonetheless doomed to fail.
The Boston quintet had been knocked from its mid-'70s perch by the end of the decade, hobbled by escalating substance abuse and exhausted from touring relentlessly in support of 1977's underperforming Draw the Line. This incessant tour schedule interrupted the sessions for Night in the Ruts, and Aerosmith's performances grew increasingly erratic as they ramped up their drug usage even more.
This exhaustion and debauchery worsened the friction between Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. The tension came to a head backstage after a show in Cleveland on July 28, 1979, and the guitarist quit the band following a cataclysmic argument. Aerosmith replaced Perry with Jimmy Crespo, who served as an official member of the band from 1979 through 1984.
Night in the Ruts' commercial performance reflected the band's burnout. The album debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 but quickly fell down the charts and was panned by critics. Its only single, a cover of the Shangri-Las' "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," fizzled at No. 67 on the Hot 100.
Still, Night in the Ruts is far from the unmitigated disaster some critics made it out to be. From the autobiographical rocker "No Surprise" to the sleazy, riff-driven "Bone to Bone (Coney Island White Fish Boy)," the record features some of Aerosmith's most fiery performances, harking back to their mid-'70s glory days of Toys in the Attic and Rocks. Still, the album was relegated to the dustbin of history when Aerosmith made their miraculous, MTV-fueled comeback in the late '80s.

BSCD2: When a standard CD is mastered, an Infared beam is used to make the digital notches on the master disc (mother matrix). With the Blu-spec master, a blue laser is used which is a finer etching process. With this technology, the notches are therefore more precise which reduce playback errors. The notches on a Blu-spec CD have a width of 125 nm compared to the 500 nm width on a standard CD.

Aerosmith - Draw The Line [Japanese Ed.] (1977)

Year: December 9, 1977 (CD Oct 9, 2013)
Label: Sony Music (Japan), SICP 30371
Style: Hard Rock
Country: Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.
Time: 35:17

Size: 237 Mb

By 1977, Aerosmith had released four studio albums, the two most recent – Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976) – catapulting the band to stardom. However, as the band began recording its next album, Draw the Line, their excessive lifestyle, combined with constant touring and drug use, began to take its toll. "Draw the Line was untogether because we weren't a cohesive unit anymore," guitarist Joe Perry admitted in the Stephen Davis band memoir Walk This Way. "We were drug addicts dabbling in music, rather than musicians dabbling in drugs."
Although the LP would sell well more than a million copies in fewer than six weeks after its release, in 2014 Perry would refer to it as "the beginning of the end" and "the decay of our artistry."
It was recorded between June–October in an abandoned convent near New York City. The portrait of the band on the album cover was drawn by the celebrity caricaturist Al Hirschfeld.

AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap [Japanese Ed.] (1976)

Year: 20 September 1976 (CD Dec 19, 2007)
Label: Sony Music (Japan), SICP 1701
Style: Hard Rock
Country: Sydney, Australia
Time: 39:59
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 280 Mb

Charts: AUS #5, CAN #95, FRA #15, GER #19, NZ #20, SWE #50, SWI #25, UK #13, US #3. SWI & UK: Gold; GER: Platinum; AUS: 6x Platinum; US: 7x Platinum.
AC/DC began recording Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap in December 1975 at Albert Studios with Harry Vanda and George Young (elder brother of guitarists Malcolm and Angus) producing. In April 1976, the band went on their first tour of the UK, where "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" was released as a single. According to the book AC/DC: Maximum Rock & Roll, Vanda and Young travelled to the UK to record several songs with the band at Vineland Studios for a scheduled EP, which was eventually scrapped. "Carry Me Home" later appeared in 1977 as a B-side to "Dog Eat Dog", while "Dirty Eyes" remained unreleased and was later reworked into "Whole Lotta Rosie" for 1977's Let There Be Rock. Only "Love at First Feel" was used for Dirty Deeds, but not for the Australian release. A song titled "I'm a Rebel" was recorded at Maschener Studios as well, with music and lyrics written by another elder Young brother, Alex Young. This song was never released by AC/DC, and remains in Albert Productions' vaults. German band Accept later released it as a single, and named their second album after it. High Voltage was released in the United States in 1976. However, hampered by visa problems and a lack of interest from Atlantic Records in the US, the band returned to Australia to finish their third album.
Cover art for the Australian version was assembled by Richard Ford at EMI Studios, Sydney, Australia.
Also according to AC/DC: Maximum Rock & Roll, years later, Stephen King convinced the band to do the soundtrack for his film Maximum Overdrive (the soundtrack released as Who Made Who) by putting "Ain't No Fun" on the record player and singing along to the entire song line-for-line in order to prove how much of a fan he was of their music.
The motel featured on the cover of the international release of the album was the Imperial 400 Motel, located at 6826 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, until being closed down in 1982 and subsequently falling under an assortment of ownerships.

AC/DC - High Voltage [Japanese Ed.] (1975)

Year: 17 February 1975 (CD Dec 19, 2007)
Label: Sony Music (Japan), SICP 1700
Style: Hard Rock
Country: Sydney, Australia
Time: 44:20
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz

Charts: AUS #14. AUS: 5x Platinum.
In November 1973, guitarists Malcolm Young and Angus Young formed AC/DC and recruited bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans, and Colin Burgess, ex-Masters Apprentices drummer. Soon the Young brothers decided that Evans was not a suitable frontman for the group; they felt he was more of a glam rocker like Gary Glitter. The band had recorded only one single with Evans, "Can I Sit Next To You Girl", with "Rockin' in the Parlour" as the B-side. In September 1974, Ronald Belford "Bon" Scott, an experienced vocalist and friend of producer George Young, replaced Dave Evans after friend Vince Lovegrove recommended him. The addition of Scott redefined the band; like the Young brothers, Scott had been born in Scotland before emigrating to Australia in his childhood, and loved rock and roll, especially Little Richard. Scott had played in the Valentines, the Spektors and Fraternity. In a 2010 interview with Mojo's Sylvie Simmons, Angus Young recalled that Scott "moulded the character of AC/DC... Everything became more down to earth and straight ahead. That's when we became a band."
