Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning (1973)

Year: October 1973 (CD 2006)
Label: Repertoire Records (Europe), REP 5078
Style: Art Rock, Symphonic Rock
Country: London, United Kingdom
Time: 40:43
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 290 Mb

Somewhat unusually, the longest history with the band is with two outside members, composer Michael Dunford and poet Betty Thatcher, who together are responsible for the music and lyrics on all but one track of the album. Both were involved in the making of the 1970 Illusion album, but are not actual members of the band. Dunford officially joined the band with the next album. The only song Dunford was not on Ashes Are Burning to compose is ”On The Frontier”, written by Renaissance founding member Jim McCarty. Who was no longer a member of the band at this point. Confusing? A bit! Thus, Ashes Are Burning is a very rare prog album where all the material is written by someone other than the band members.
Ashes Are Burning is by far the most successful album of Renaissance’s career so far and started a three-album golden era for the band. The album smoothly blends influences from both folk and classical music (no direct quotes are spared). The semi-acoustic sound was an important part of how Renaissance distinguished themselves from other progressive bands. And the acoustic aspect was especially emphasized on this Ashes Are Burning album. Instead of electric guitars and synthesizers, it is John Tout’s classical-style piano that takes centre stage, and the impressive, gentle yet powerful, five-octave vocals of Annie Haslam, who had studied opera singing. Tout also makes restrained use of synthesizers but, pleasingly, sticks mostly to piano, which was rare for early 70s rock bands. And well, for rock bands of any era really.
Although Renaissance draws much of its influence from folk, the grand symphonic nature of the band’s music also clearly distinguishes it from the core of the folk scene. A rock-like kick to the sound is added by Jon Camp’s very Chris Squire-like bass playing and of course Sullivan’s relatively straightforward drumming. Camp and his bass are given plenty of space, as the only electric guitar on the album is on the closing title track, where guesting Wishbone Ash guitarist Andy Powell gets to squeeze in a long guitar solo.

The Artwoods (Jon Lord) - Art Gallery (1966)

Year: Nov 1966 (CD 1995)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 4533-WP
Style: Rhythm and Blues, Mod
Country: London, England
Time: 78:17
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 389 Mb

The Artwoods (also sometimes known by Decca Records as the Art Woods) were a British rhythm and blues band who formed in 1963 and were professionally active between 1964 and 1967. They were a popular live attraction, rivalling groups such as the Animals, although, despite releasing a clutch of singles and an album, their record sales never reflected this popularity.
Singer Arthur Wood, from whom the band took their name, was the eldest brother of Ronnie Wood (who later found fame with the Faces and Rolling Stones). Art Wood had been a vocalist with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated for a short period during 1962, simultaneously fronting his own group, the Art Wood Combo. When keyboardist Jon Lord and guitarist Derek Griffiths from Red Bludd's Bluesicians joined the Art Wood Combo, the Artwoods were formed. With Keef Hartley, formerly with Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, joining on drums and Malcolm Pool from the Roadrunners joining as bassist, in December 1964 the band turned professional, securing a residency at London's 100 Club and signing a recording contract with Decca Records. Colin Martin joined from the band the Ingoes, who changed their name to the Blossom Toes. Martin went on to work at BBC Radio 2 where he produced Terry Wogan, Ken Bruce and Gloria Hunniford, and was later appointed as Head of Music at the station.
The intended debut single, a cover of Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man", was shelved in favour of a rendition of an old Lead Belly song, "Sweet Mary". Although it did not reach the charts, it received sufficient airplay to bring the band much live work, including an appearance on the first live edition of Ready Steady Go!. Their second record, "Oh My Love", was another blues cover. Like its predecessor (and subsequent releases), it failed to chart. Their only chart single was "I Take What I Want", which reached No. 28 on 8 May 1966. The Artwoods were one of the few British bands of the era to play behind the Iron Curtain as they toured Poland in 1966, with Lord's then-girlfriend Elkie Brooks as opener.

Mickey Jupp - Juppanese (1978)

Year: 1978 (CD 2006)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REPUK 1084
Style: Rock, Pub Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Rock and Roll
Country: Worthing, Sussex, England (6 March 1944)
Time: 57:53
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 400 Mb

Like Dave Edmunds, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Mickey Jupp was a champion of traditional rock & roll during the late '70s, a time when it had been all but discarded. Unlike Edmunds, Jupp wrote the majority of his own material, which updated '50s rock & roll with a tongue-in-cheek irony.
Jupp began his career with the Essex-based British R&B group the Orioles in the early '60s. The band earned a devoted local following in the early '60s, yet they never had the opportunity to record. The Orioles broke up late in 1965 after Jupp was arrested for not making alimony payments to his wife. Three years later, he returned to music, forming Legend, who laid the groundwork for English pub rock of the early '70s. Following the release of their third album in 1971, Legend disbanded and Jupp took another lengthy break from music. When he was coaxed back into performing in 1975 by Lee Brilleaux, the lead singer of Dr. Feelgood, pub rock was in its last days yet Jupp was well respected in the scene, since both Ducks Deluxe and Dr. Feelgood had recorded versions of his songs ("Cheque Book" and "Down at the Doctors," respectively).
Jupp released his first solo single, "Nature's Radio," on Arista Records in 1978. The single led to a contract with Stiff Records, who released the "Old Rock 'N' Roller" single and the Juppanese album in 1978; the bulk of Juppanese was recorded with Rockpile and produced by Nick Lowe. Released the same year as his debut, Mickey Jupp's Legend featured material from his previous band. Following the release of Juppanese, Jupp joined Stiff's Rail Tour, although he left the lineup before it hit the U.S. because he was afraid of flying. Shortly afterward, he left Stiff Records and signed with Chrysalis in 1979. The same year he released Long Distance Romancer, which was produced by 10cc members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme; like Juppanese, it failed to gain a large audience. Jupp moved over to A&M Records in 1982, releasing Some People Can't Dance. After releasing one more record on A&M, 1983's Shampoo Haircut and Shave, he was dropped from the label. Jupp spent the rest of the '80s and '90s touring the U.K., releasing the occasional album on independent labels.

The Troggs - The Singles A's & B's [3CD 1965-1973] (2004)

Year: November 2004 (CD 2004)
Label: Repertoire Records (UK), REPUK 1028
Style: Rock, Garage Rock
Country: Andover, Hampshire, England
Time: 75:46, 75:00, 78:30
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 335, 506, 531 Mb

Who can forget "Wild Thing" The Troggs have always been remembered for this 60s anthem, but it is just one of their many UK hits. "With A Girl Like You", "I Can't Control Myself", "Anyway That You Want Me", "Give It To Me" and "Love Is All Around". They all followed in rapid succession to give The Troggs world-wide acclaim. Dubbed by many as the "first British punk band" they have continued playing in their own uncompromising style of good basic rock music.
Never strangers to controversy, many of their records were considered by the "powers that be" too suggestive for the masses, and they consequently banned them. How anybody could judge Reg Presley's tongue-in-cheek delivery to be dangerous to the morals of the young is hard to believe.
Their popularity has never waned and they are still in great demand both in the UK and the rest of Europe, where they regularly headline festivals attracting thousands of fans. Their appeal hold no age barriers, fans ranging from the stalwarts who have supported them throughout the years to the many new fans from the younger generation. The Troggs and "Wild Thing" have been used in many advertising campaigns in recent years. For instance "The Rowntrees Lion Bar" in the UK, coffee in Scandinavia, Mexican relish in the USA and Canada and insurance in Europe. "Anyway That You Want Me" was re-recorded for a Yoplait Fruit Royale commercial, and in Germany there was a re-release of "With A Girl Like You" to coincide with a televised promotion for the milk and friut juice packaging company Tetrapak. A CD which also included "Wild Thing" and "I Can't Control Myself" was issued to publicise the product. Now, in the 2000's, The Troggs are very much a "cult" band.

Quintessence - Quintessence (1970)

Year: 1970 (CD 2004)
Label: Repertoire Records (UK), REPUK 1016
Style: Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Country: Notting Hill, London, England
Time: 48:16
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 333 Mb

Second album by Quintessence had been in some way slightly advanced compared to their debut with more elaborate tracks and a less pop-ish sound. On the other hand it appeared as well rather incoherent with spiritual chants standing at times blatantly besides acid jamming and Cream-ish heavy blues rocking. Overall it revealed a kind of nice atmosphere not too far away from the one in early Krautrock albums. Their ecumenical hymn "Jesus, Buddha, Moses, Gauranga" which opens the album reflects very well the spirit of this record they dedicated "to Our Lord Jesus". This one's by far the only commercially sounding one on here belonging together with "Notting Hill Gate" and "Gange Mai" from their debut to the most memorable songs by them. "Sea of immortality" sounds considerably more sophisticated exploding into a jam session and here's the place where the hint to Cream becomes obvious. "High on Mt. Kailash" is an excerpt of a planned rock opera starting with birds singing and reveals droning sitar, some jingling temple bells and Shiva's haunting vocals that remind me at times a lot to Jim Morrison's. That one's quite a mysterious and fascinating track and certainly one of the highlights of this album. After that one there's a sudden skip to the live recorded very loud instrumental "Burning bush" featuring heavy jamming of wah-wah guitar, bass and drums. This track seams to be not very well placed between the previous one and the following spiritual "Shiva's Chant" and as Chris Welch suggests in his liner notes the close array of these contrasting performances presented here by the band might reflect in some way the contrast between the two aspects of their style. But in fact the rather imperfect structure of this album and its appearance as more of a compilation of songs than a coherent work is the only reason for considering it less essential. For the song material here is really substantial as demonstrated by the next two tracks "Prisms" and "Twilight Zones". The former one is all instrumental and consists of an improvised flute solo by Raja Ram with the addition of some great echo effects. This one segues seamlessly into the next track being an excellent ballad-type one dominated by Shiva's vocals and backed with flute and guitar. "Maha Mantra" is another hypnotic chant followed by the slow ballad "Only Love" whereas in "St. Pancras" the band presents us once again their live jam qualities. The short track "Infinitum" finally closes this rather strange album with a quite awkward droning sound. But overall such kind of hypnotic and droning sections which aren't not that much my "cup" usually are kept here quite shorted and I really don't find them disturbing at all.
As a summary of my review I've to say though I usually don't favour albums with religious contents this one was quite appealing to me albeit being a more difficult listen than their debut. Nevertheless it's a kind of acquired taste and some people might feel alienated by its religious background. Thus I would not consider it essential in a general Prog context but fans of Krautrock or spiritually influenced "hippie music" might check out this band. Actually I'd rate their first two releases as equally good with 3 ? stars but since I've put 3 for their debut I'll round up here to 4!

Harvey Mandel - Shangrenade (1973)

Year: 1973 (CD 1998)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 4712-WG
Style: Jazz-Rock, Instrumental
Country: Detroit, Michigan, U.S. (March 11, 1945)
Time: 31:21
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 209 Mb

Mr. Mandel made some sweet music with Canned Heat and he also made some super solo jazzy blues rock platters. This great musician doesn't seem to have received the accolades he deserves. I can't stress enough how good these solo albums are if you are into well played funky/jazzy/jammy, blues rock. I would recommend any of Mr. Mandel's early (70's) recordings to any guitar freak. I believe they are that good.
Review by rod45. Dec 30 2016 . 4/5
When I first listened to this particular album of his and I was completely blown away by his playing. This collection of fusion inspired funk rock tracks should grace any list of best instrumental albums. Mandels use of tapping predates almost any other recorded music and his use of it has to be heard to be believed. Highly recommended to any guitar freak or fan of instrumental music.
Review by SixStringMark. Dec 26 2007. 4/5
Why does this album not show up in all the lists of essential guitar albums? Shangrenade is an album of great instrumental music and wonderful guitar innovation. At the time of it's release, no one was using the two handed finger tapping technique that Mandel had mastered. The album was truely years ahead of it's time. Today, many guitarists routinely use the techniques that originated with this album. Even if you are not a guitar player and cannot appreciate the innovative playing, this album is still a gem to listen to. A classic jazzy funky rock instrumental record. It has always been one of my personal favorites.

Quintessence - Dive Deep (1971)

Year: March 1971 (CD Jan 10, 2005)

Style: Progressive Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Country: Notting Hill, London, England
Time: 42:07
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 278 Mb

Lead by Australian-born violinist and flutist Rothfield (AKA Raja Ram), keyboardist Phil Jones (Shiva Shankar) and Shambu Babaji on bass, this North-London group had very strong spiritual Indian classical music influences. Their first two albums, In Blissfull Company and their eponymous second album (they had much success riding on the popular sudden passion provoked by the BEATLES) are filled with Indian Sacred Chants and Psalms, but also much more accessible jazz-filled rock tracks full of delightful moments. Their third album Dive Deep was less spiritually oriented and contained more jazz-influenced improvisations with longer intrumental interplay tracks. After the partially live album Self some key members left to form the similar KALA, and QUINTESSENCE released on last album that was simply not quintessential anymore.
At their top , QUINTESSENCE was a magnificient group playing some superb Indian-laced psychadelic rock and are fondly remembered by all etnic fusion music afficianados and old hippies around the world.

Leaf Hound - Growers Of Mushroom (1971)

Year: October 1971 (CD 2005)
Label: Repertoire Records (UK), REPUK 1079
Style: Hard Rock, Blues Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 48:06
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 365 Mb

Growers of Mushroom is the debut studio album by English hard rock band Leaf Hound. It was originally released in 1970 as Leaf Hound by Telefunken in Germany only. It was re-released in 1971 in the UK by Decca as Growers of Mushroom. It is the only album by the original line-up of the band. Consisting of original material, the album is often cited as a pioneering example of heavy metal, hard rock, psychedelic rock and stoner rock.
Leaf Hound came together in 1970. They signed a contract with management agency Lynton Maitland, who arranged an album deal with Decca and one day of studio recording time. Growers of Mushroom was recorded in one 11-hour session at Spot Studios in Mayfair, London.
All but one of the tracks were composed by members of the band. Most of the material was written by vocalist Pete French and lead guitarist Mick Halls, who were cousins. According to French, late in the recording session they realised that they had run out of songs and time was limited, so he and Halls composed "With a Minute to Go" on the spot. According to an interview with French in 2019, the impromptu composition was "Sawdust Caesar". Another telling has it that "With a Minute to Go" and "Sawdust Caesar" had their titles mistakenly swapped on the record, and were left that way. The title track "Growers of Mushroom" was named after a story from the Pan Book of Horror Stories, about a woman slowly poisoning her husband with toadstools, although the lyrics were more about having a hallucination. The song not composed by the band was "Drowned My Life in Fear", written by Peter Ross.

Leaf Hound - Unleashed (2007)

Year: 2007 (CD Nov 12, 2007)
Label: Repertoire Records (UK), RAR 1020
Style: Hard Rock, Blues Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 48:00
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 332 Mb

After Repertoire Records reissued the 1971 debut Growers of Mushroom from British hard rock legends Leaf Hound a few years back, it was only appropriate that they also release the first new recordings from this band in 36 years. 2007's Unleashed, which sees original singer Peter French fronting the new line-up of guitarist Luke Rayner, bassist Ed Pearson, and drummer Jimmy Rowland, successfully hones in on that bluesy heavy rock style that the original Leaf Hound spearheaded all those years ago. It's modern sounding, but still containing those classic elements that are near and dear to so many fans.
French, who also went on to play with both Atomic Rooster and Cactus after leaving Leaf Hound, is in surprisingly very good form vocally here, and he has quite the find in young guitar stud Rayner. Heavy rockers like "The Man With the Moon in Him", "One Hundred and Five Degrees", and "Stop, Look and Listen" contain plenty of beefy, snarling heavy rock riffs that will appease any fan of the original Leaf Hound album, as well as other acts like Humble Pie, Bad Company, Mountain, and Foghat. "Barricades" and "Nickels and Dimes" have a fun, blues-rock vibe to them that's not unlike some of the Rolling Stones '70s output, while "Too Many Rock 'N' Roll Times" mixes Cream & Ten Years After styled swagger thanks to French's great vocal and some scorching blues-rock riffs from Rayner. The band even does a great heavy cover of the Atomic Rooster song "Breaththrough", paying tribute to the late Hammond organ master Vincent Crane, with Rayner tossing in some massive riffs and solos to cover all the original organ parts.
Honestly, this is as pure a '70s styled heavy rock album as you are going to get in this day and age. French, who I must once again stress, sounds fantastic here, has done a great job assembling a red-hot band of younger guys to help him carry out his current vision of Leaf Hound. If you like this sort of thing, don't miss out on Unleashed, and we can only hope the band have something else new up their sleeves, as this one is now six years old. Word has it that they are working on a live album to be released sometime in late 2013, which should really be something to look forward to.

Birth Control - Rebith (1973)

Year: 1973 (CD 2001)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 4943
Style: Progressive Rock, Art Rock
Country: West Berlin, West Germany
Time: 38:15
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 275 Mb

Birth Control formed in 1966 in West Berlin from two other bands, the Earls and the Gents. The band was founded with a lineup consisting of Bernd Koschmidder (bass), Reinhold Sobotta (organ), Rolf Gurra (saxophone, vocals), Fritz Groger (vocals), Reiner Borchert (guitar), Hugo Egon Balder (drums), and Klaus Orso (guitar). Within five years of the band's formation all seven of the original members had departed, but the band continued under the leadership of long-standing members drummer (and later lead vocalist) Bernd Noske (who replaced Balder in late 1968) and guitarist Bruno Frenzel (who replaced Borchert in 1969).
Following the death of Frenzel in 1983, the group disbanded, but reunited in 1993 with only Noske remaining from the previous lineup. Other members of the reformed band included returning bassist/vocalist Horst Stachelhaus, as well as guitarist Rocco Zodiak and keyboardist Xaver Fischer.
Despite the death of mainstay Stachelhaus in 1999, the band continued under Noske's guidance, touring Germany and release new albums periodically following the turn of the century. In later years, former members Peter Foller (bass, vocals) and Zeus B. Held (keyboards) both returned to the fold as guest musicians at occasional concerts. The band came to an end on February 18, 2014 with the death of Noske. The final lineup of the band consisted of Noske, bassist Hannes Vesper, keyboardist Sascha Kuhn, and guitarist Martin Ettrich.
In 2016 the band regrouped and started performing again. The new lineup consisted of several members who at some point were part of the band's history: Peter Foller (vocals), Martin Ettrich (guitar, talkbox), Sascha Kuhn (keyboards), Hannes Vesper (bass) and Manni von Bohr (drums). In the same year they released a new studio album ("Here and Now") for the first time in 13 years.

Shocking Blue - Inkpot (1972) Attila (1972) [2LP on 1CD]

Year: 1972 (CD 1997)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 4610-WP
Style: Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Country: The Hague, Netherlands
Time: 76:32
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz

Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in The Hague in 1967. They were part of the Nederbeat movement in the Netherlands. The band had a string of hit songs during the counterculture movement of the 1960s and early 1970s, including "Send Me a Postcard" and "Venus", which became their biggest hit and reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and many other countries during 1969 and 1970. The band sold 13 million records by 1973 but disbanded in 1974. Together with Golden Earring and the George Baker Selection, they are considered the most successful Nederbeat band, because their best hits charted abroad and especially in the United States.
Drummer Cor van der Beek died on 2 April 1998 at age 49 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Mariska Veres died of gallbladder cancer on 2 December 2006 at age 59 in The Hague, Netherlands. Bassist Klaasje van der Wal died on 12 February 2018 at age 69.
Bananarama covered "Venus" in 1986, hitting number 1 in the United States, Canada, and Australia, and reaching number 8 in the UK.
Nirvana covered "Love Buzz" as their debut single in 1988 and later included it on their first album Bleach in 1989.

Man - Man (1971)

Year: March 1971 (CD 2001)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 4969
Style: Psychedelic Rock, Blues Rock, Country Rock
Country: Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Time: 54:24
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 344 Mb

It was the first album by this line-up, Terry Williams having replaced Jeff Jones on drums, while Martin Ace replaced Ray Williams on bass.
As well as a change in personnel, the album also represented a change in record label from Pye Records to United Artists (released under the UA stable "Liberty" imprint) with whom the band would remain until 1976. Reviews were mixed, particularly regarding the long tracks "Would the Christians...." and "Alchemist" which were an attempt to recreate some of the longer improvised jams that the band performed on stage, but which did not have the same impact on vinyl.
The music of Man contains elements of country rock and heavy metal.[2]
The album contained three shorter tunes: "Country Girl" that showed a clash of direction but showcases some fine Welsh harmonies. "Daughter of the Fireplace", a Leonard-penned rocker, which became a stage favourite (and highlight of Man's 1972 live LP Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth) while "Romain", a bluesy-shuffle, was written as a reaction to Martin Ace's treatment by a Belgian police officer of the same name when he attempted to intervene in a situation at a music festival; the song remains in the Man live set to the present day.

The Graham Bond Organisation - There's A Bond Between Us [6 bonus tracks] (1965)

Year: 10 December 1965 (CD 2009)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 5117
Style: Blues Rock, British Invasion, Jazz Rock
Country: United Kingdom
Time: 59:09
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 312 Mb

Jack Bruce (Bass, Vocals), Ginger Baker (Drums, Original Cover Design), Graham Bond (Hammond Organ, Alto Saxophone, Mellotron, Lead Vocals), Dick Heckstall-Smith (Tenor Saxophone), Robert Stigwood (Producer).
Bond's second album stakes out similar territory as his debut in a more polished but slightly less exciting fashion. Some of the covers are a bit routine and hackneyed, and the original material isn't quite as strong (or frequent) as on the first effort. On a few tunes, the group expands from rave-ups to mellower, jazzier ballads that retain an R&B base. Highlights include the early Jack Bruce composition "Hear Me Calling Your Name" (to which he also contributes a fine lead vocal) and the excellent Bond tune "Walkin' in the Park," which holds up to the best early British R&B numbers. The album is also notable for being one of the very first rock LPs to feature the Mellotron, which Bond uses subtly and well.
