Love Sculpture - Blues Helping (1968)

Year: October 1968 (CD 2008)
Label: Esoteric Recordings (Europe), ECLEC 2015
Style: Rock, Blues Rock
Country: Cardiff, Wales
Time: 52:32
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 320 Mb

Love Sculpture were founded in Cardiff in 1966 by former members of the Human Beans. The band mostly performed blues standards, slightly revved-up, but still close to the originals. Their debut album Blues Helping included the songs "Summertime" and "Wang Dang Doodle". They are best known for their 1968 novelty hit in the UK Singles Chart, a high-speed cover version of the classical piece "Sabre Dance" by Aram Khachaturian, released on the Parlophone label (R 5744), which reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart in December 1968. The recording was inspired by Keith Emerson's classical rearrangements. "Sabre Dance" became a hit after receiving air play by British DJ John Peel, who was so impressed that he played it twice in one programme. In December 1968, UK music magazine NME reported that Love Sculpture had signed a US recording contract with London Records, guaranteeing ?250,000.
The band were also given an invitation to perform "Sabre Dance" live on the German Beat-Club television programme of Radio Bremen, being broadcast in monochrome at that time. Second album Forms and Feelings followed, including the aforementioned "Sabre Dance", and additional songs including , "In The Land of the Few", "Farandole", "People People", "Seagull (West Coast Oil Tragedy)", written by Paul Korda, and the equally fast cover of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me". The US version of the album also featured a recording of "Mars" from Gustav Holst's The Planets, but Holst's estate refused to license the tune for the UK version. They recorded for BBC Radio 1's John Peel sessions in 1968 (twice) and 1969. In 1970 Mickey Gee joined the band as a second guitarist, and Terry Williams replaced Rob Jones on drums.
Love Sculpture split up in 1970 after a US tour, having recorded just the two albums. Edmunds went on to solo number one hit success with "I Hear You Knocking" later in 1970, and collaborated heavily with ex-Brinsley Schwarz bassist Nick Lowe, eventually forming the band Rockpile with him and Terry Williams.

Man - Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day (1972)

Year: November 1972 (CD 1991)
Label: BGO Records (UK), BGOCD 14
Style: Progressive Rock, Rock
Country: Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Time: 36:04
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 198 Mb

Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day is the sixth album by the Welsh rock band Man. Issued just two months after the previous album, Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth, it features a radically different line-up. Martin Ace having left, and Deke Leonard having been fired, Clive John returned, bringing with him Phil Ryan and Will Youatt, with whom Clive had formed Iorwerth Pritchard and the Neutrons when he left Man in 1971. This is the only studio album by this particular line-up, which also recorded the live Christmas at the Patti before Clive John left again.
The LP had a prize-winning gatefold sleeve that, when opened, unfolded a 2' by 2' (61 cm by 61 cm) cartoon map of Wales, showing the origins of numerous Welsh bands, including Man, and other places of interest. The country was shown as an island, separated from England by a large channel of water, and being pushed away from her neighbour by ten men using long poles.
The inner sleeve featured 'Man's Family Jungle', Man's family tree, similar to those prepared by Pete Frame, but in a scrawled version drawn by Leonard, despite him having been recently fired from the band, as is acknowledged on the chart. On the earlier CD issues (prior to 2007) the map was unreadably small and the 'Family Jungle' was missing. Due to the complications of a previous publishing contract, newly arrived bassist Will Youatt did not appear in the writing credits despite allegedly making a significant contribution to the songs.

Album recorded and mixed in the analog domain - AAD. That is, a minimum of digital processing.
A=Analog. D=digital. The first letter stands for how the music was recorded. The second letter for how it was mixed. The third letter stands for the format (all CD's will have D as the last letter).

Rockpile (Dave Edmunds) - Seconds Of Pleasure [7 bonus tracks] (1980)

Year: October 1980 (CD April 27, 2004)
Label: Columbia Records, Legacy Recordings (US), CK 63983
Style: Power Pop, Rockabilly, Pub Rock
Country: Cardiff, Wales (15 April 1944)
Time: 54:17
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 384 Mb

Seconds of Pleasure is a 1980 album by Rockpile, a band consisting of guitarists/vocalists Dave Edmunds and Billy Bremner, bassist/vocalist Nick Lowe, and drummer Terry Williams. The band had played together on various solo albums by Edmunds and Lowe in previous years, but Seconds of Pleasure would be the first (and only) album released under the Rockpile name.
The album's opening track, "Teacher, Teacher", became a minor hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Kenny Pickett and Eddie Phillips, both of whom were former members of the 1960s British rock band The Creation. The song appears in the opening credits of the 2011 film, Bad Teacher.
"(Wrong Again) Let’s Face It” is a cover of the Squeeze song that was given away as a flexi-disc on the cover of the 4 October 1979 edition of Smash Hits.
A four-song EP, Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds Sing the Everly Brothers, was included in the first pressings of the LP; the songs were later included on the album's various CD versions.
The front cover is a painting by the designer Barney Bubbles, who used pseudonyms and rarely signed his work. This is signed "Dag".

Dave Edmunds - Subtle As A Flying Mallet (1975)

Style: Rock and Roll
Country: Cardiff, Wales (15 April 1944)
Time: 43:14
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz

David William Edmunds (born 15 April 1944) is a Welsh singer, guitarist, and record producer who helped revive the sound of 1950s rock and roll and rockabilly during the 1970s and 1980s. He first rose to prominence as the lead guitarist of Love Sculpture, known for their high-tempo instrumental “Sabre Dance,” before launching a successful solo career. His 1970 cover of Smiley Lewis’s “I Hear You Knocking” became a UK Christmas No. 1 and reached No. 4 in the US. In 1976 he co-founded the band Rockpile with Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner and Terry Williams, combining pub rock, new wave and power pop influences, notably releasing the album Seconds of Pleasure in 1980. Throughout his career, Edmunds was also acclaimed as a producer, working with artists such as Nick Lowe and the Stray Cats. He released several notable solo albums including Repeat When Necessary (1979), D.E. 7th (1982) and Information (1983) before retiring in 2017. Regarded as a “musician’s musician,” Edmunds is celebrated for his crisp guitar style, deep respect for roots music, and bridging of eras in British and American rock traditions.

Man - Man (1971)

Year: March 1971 (CD 2001)
Label: Repertoire Records (Germany), REP 4969
Style: Psychedelic Rock, Blues Rock, Country Rock
Country: Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Time: 54:24
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 344 Mb

It was the first album by this line-up, Terry Williams having replaced Jeff Jones on drums, while Martin Ace replaced Ray Williams on bass.
As well as a change in personnel, the album also represented a change in record label from Pye Records to United Artists (released under the UA stable "Liberty" imprint) with whom the band would remain until 1976. Reviews were mixed, particularly regarding the long tracks "Would the Christians...." and "Alchemist" which were an attempt to recreate some of the longer improvised jams that the band performed on stage, but which did not have the same impact on vinyl.
The music of Man contains elements of country rock and heavy metal.[2]
The album contained three shorter tunes: "Country Girl" that showed a clash of direction but showcases some fine Welsh harmonies. "Daughter of the Fireplace", a Leonard-penned rocker, which became a stage favourite (and highlight of Man's 1972 live LP Live at the Padget Rooms, Penarth) while "Romain", a bluesy-shuffle, was written as a reaction to Martin Ace's treatment by a Belgian police officer of the same name when he attempted to intervene in a situation at a music festival; the song remains in the Man live set to the present day.

Man - Do You Like It Here Now, Are You Settling In (1971)

Year: November 1971 (CD 2007)
Label: Esoteric Records (Europe), ECLEC 2013
Style: Rock, Progressive Rock
Country: Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
Time: 73:30
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 425 Mb

The album was recorded in August at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. Sessions took place soon after the band's 'All Good Clean Fun' tour of Switzerland, although a brief break in their German tour schedule during the late spring had resulted in two tracks being written at a studio in Swansea. The album title is apparently a Swansea saying, usually directed at pub landlords of exceptionally long standing.
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_You_Like_It_Here_Now,_Are_You_Settling_In%3F)
Long a fan favorite, Man's fourth studio album was recorded in 1971 during a harried one-week studio session that found the group having to write nearly the entire album, barring the tight and rocking "Angel Easy" and the group's multi-part masterwork "Many Are Called but Few Get Up." Frankly, the album sounds like a record that was largely jammed in the studio; the eight-minute-plus jams that close each side, "We're Only Children" and "Love Your Life," are particularly tiresome, good instrumental and lyrical ideas stretched well past their breaking points. However, besides the superior "Angel Easy" and "Many Are Called but Few Get Up," the album does include the rather wonderful "All Good Clean Fun," a showcase for pianist Clive John and lead guitarist Deke Leonard that has a delightful prog pop playfulness akin to some of Genesis' more lighthearted early moments or the daffiness of the later band Hatfield & the North. The album may be only half good, but that half is among Man's very best work.
