Livin' Blues - Ram Jam Josey (1973)

Year: 1973 (CD 1997)
Label: Pseudonym Records (Europe), CDP 1042 DD
Style: Blues Rock, Rock
Country: Netherlands
Time: 50:27
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 269 Mb

Livin’ Blues was one of the best Dutch blues bands. Many people think the band's name came from the American magazine called Living Blues, but that wasn't established until 1970. Former members of the band claim it was based on the name of an American theatre group called Living Theatre.
They evolved in 1967 from Andy Star & the Stripes with Ted Oberg (g) and Ruud Franssen (b) and then added Bjorn Pool (v) and Niek Dijkhuis (d). In 1968, they took on board the blues duo Indiscrimination with John Lagrand (blues harp) and Nicko Christiansen (v, s), the latter replacing Pool. During the same year, Gerard Strotbaum replaced Franssen and Cesar Zuiderwijk (ex-Hu & the Hilltops, to Golden Earring) came in on drums. The band started getting more and more attention, resulting in a record contract with the mighty Phonogram (who distributed labels like Decca and Philips). They opened a show for Fleetwood Mac during a small winter tour of 1969.
After they had recorded two unsuccessful singles, Strotbaum was replaced by Henk Smitskamp (ex-Motions, to Sandy Coast). The line-up of Oberg, Lagrand, Christiansen, Zuiderwijk and Smitskamp recorded the highly acclaimed album, "Hell’s Session" in 1969, the first production of former Golden Earrings drummer Jaap Eggermont (later world-famous through his Stars On 45 productions), for a new label, Red Bullet (owned by Willem van Kooten a.k.a. DJ Joost den Draaijer).
In 1970, Smitskamp was replaced by Ruud van Buuren (ex-Groep 1850, to Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers). When Zuiderwijk joined Golden Earring, Dick Beekman (ex-Cuby + Blizzards and Ro-d-ys) was next in the long line of drummers to join the band. Livin’ Blues seemed to change drummers on a yearly basis. After "Wang Dang Doodle" became an international hit, the band started touring Europe, one highlight being their appearance at the Palermo Pop Festival in Sicily. Then John Le Jeune (ex-Island) took over the drum stool, but he also lasted for just one album. The band had another international hit with "LB Boogie" and made their first visit to Poland, where they'd become one of the most successful bands ever.
Le Jeune left for the Schick Band and was replaced by Arjan Kamminga, who was forced to quit not long after the release of "Rockin’ At The Tweedmill" (recorded in England and produced by Mike Vernon) due to back problems. He would later resurface in Mark Foggo & Secret Meeting. In 1973, Englishman Kenny Lamb became the last drummer of the first era of Livin’ Blues. The album "Ram Jam Josey" was again produced by Mike Vernon who'd also recommended Lamb (ex-Jellybread, a British blues band recording for Vernon's Blue Horizon label).
In 1974, “Mark I” Livin’ Blues fell apart. John Lagrand joined Water, Nicko Cristiansen formed Himalaya, Kenny Lamb returned to England and Ruud van Buuren joined Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers. Ted Oberg had to continue with Livin’ Blues because their manager (Ted's mother!) had signed new contracts with Ariola and Grandad Music. John Fredriksz (ex-George Cash and Q’65, the singer who always seemed to come in when a band's heyday was over) became the new vocalist. They also took on board Paul Vink (kb, ex-Finch, to Limousine), but he only lasted a few months. The line-up was completed by the returning Henk Smitskamp (b, from Shocking Blue), Ronnie Meyjes (g, ex-Brainbox) and Michel Driesten (d) and had a disco hit with "Boogie Woogie Woman", a far cry from the earlier blues-rock sound. By the time the album "Live ’75" was recorded, Meyes and Driesten had disappeared and Cor van de Beek (also from Shocking Blue) was the drummer.
The 1976 line-up was: Ted, Johnny, Andre Reynen (bass, ex-Sympathy and Brainbox) and Jacob van Heiningen (drums, ex-Galaxis, replaced by Ed Molenwijk, ex-Dizzy Daisy, to Casino). In spite of the internationally successful album, "Blue Breeze" (1977), the band were without a recording contract by 1978. Jan Piet Visser (h, ex-Houseband) joined in 1979, but a year after that the core of "Mark I" Livin’ Blues reunited for the 1980 Haagse Beatnach: Oberg, Lagrand and Christiansen were joined by Evert Willemstijn (b) and Boris (Bo, Beau) Wassenbergh (dr, ex¬Cashmere, to The Zoo). That line-up started touring again, but due to the lack of interest in the blues music, Livin’ Blues slowly ground to a halt in the first half of the 1980s. In the meantime, Johnny Frederiksz, Andre Reynen and Jan Piet Visser formed Nitehawk. When that band also turned out to be unsuccessful, Ted Oberg formed the J&T Band (Johnny & Ted) with Frederiksz, adding ex-Finch members Peter Vink (b) and Fred van Vloten (d).
In 1986, John Lagrand and Nicko Christiansen reformed Livin’ Blues and, for the first time since 1967, Ted Oberg was not present. Other members were: Joop van Nimwegen (g, ex-Q’65 and Finch), Willem van de Wall (g, ex-Himalaya), Aad van Pijlen (b, ex-Freelance Band and Himalaya) and Art Bausch (d, ex-Barrelhouse, ex-Oscar Benton, and founder member of Blue Planet). After one unsuccessful album, "Now", Lagrand left to join the Muskee Gang and Christiansen got a new line-up together. However, the rights to the name Livin’ Blues were owned by Ted Oberg's mother and Christiansen had to call the band New Livin’ Blues. Just like all preceding line-ups, New Livin’ Blues went through many changes, which are impossible to document (mainly due to the lack of press coverage and record releases). On the CD "Out Of The Blue" (1995), the line-up was: Christiansen, Loek van der Knaap (g), Frank Buschman (b) and Elout Smit (d).
In 1996, John Lagrand joined the reformed Cuby + Blizzards and two years later, Nicko Christiansen formed the Nicko C Band, keeping Loek van der Knaap on board. In 1998, Ted Oberg formed his own band Oberg with Jan Scherpenzeel (v, h), Frank Schaafsma (b) and Ramon Rambeaux (d, ex-Wild Romance, replaced by Ronald Oor, ex-Diesel and I’ve Got The Bullets). At the end of that year, Nicko Christiansen and John Lagrand toured with guitarist Eelco Gelling (ex-Cuby + Blizzards) as Nederblues Summit.
In 2003, Christiansen and Lagrand wanted to start performing again as Livin’ Blues, but Oberg objected. The new band was then named Blues A- Livin’ instead. Oberg reappeared the following year, touring with Simone Roerade (v), Rob Geboers (kb, ex-Flavlum). Marco Oonincx (b, ex- Ana Popovic Band) and drummer Arie Verhaar (ex-Tom Principato and Tino Gonzales), as Grand Slam.
On 30th June, 2005, John Lagrand died at the age of 55 from emphysema. Christiansen continued as The Livin’ Blues Experience with Loek van der Knaap (g), Yaroon Vanniele (bas), Kees van Krugten (d) and Francois Spannenburg (blues harp). In 2009, Livin’ Blues was voted as the "best international blues band" by readers of the Two Blues magazine in Poland. Ted Oberg has called his band Oberg once again, although it is now fronted by female singer Liane Hoogeveen. The other members are: Mick Hup (g, replaced Will Sophie), Nico Heilijgers (b) and Paul Damen (d).

Ekseption - Mindmirror (1975)

Year: 1975 (CD 2019)
Label: 6423 082
Style: Progressive Rock, Pop Rock, Jazz Rock
Country: Haarlem, Netherlands
Time: 36:26
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 199 Mb

Ekseption was a Dutch rock band active from 1967 to 1989, playing mostly-instrumental progressive rock and classical rock. The central character in the changing roster, and the only band member present on every album, was conservatory-trained trumpeter Rein van den Broek (10 September 1945 - 11 May 2015). The band saw some commercial success in the 1970s, having Dutch top ten hit singles with their adaptations of Beethoven's "Fifth" and Bach's "Air". The second album, Beggar Julia's Time Trip (1969), won the Dutch Edison Award for album of the year, and the first five albums all went gold.
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekseption)
Following the departure of keyboardist and founder Rick van der Linden, the Dutch band Ekseption took a rapid downhill turn under new leader Hans Jansen. Unlike the earlier mix of classics, rock, and jazz, this edition of the band seems absolutely directionless. The opener to this dreadful LP is a cover of The Average White Band's hit "Pick Up the Pieces," one of the most monotonous songs ever to hit the airways in America. The treatment of Bach's "Bourree" is laughable. Since there is no personnel listing on the album jacket, it's hard to tell if the remaining five numbers are by members of Ekseption, though none of them are very special, relegating the horns to dull background work while tending to emphasize electric guitar and Jansen's unimpressive keyboard work. The lengthy title track is a mix of different styles that seem like pieces that don't fit together. It's hardly puzzling that Ekseption disbanded following the release of this very disappointing LP.

Focus - Hamburger Concerto [Japanese Ed. K2HD] (1974)

Year: May 1974 (CD Dec 16, 2006)
Label: Victor Records (Japan), VICP-63667
Style: Progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock
Country: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Time: 43:08
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 298 Mb

Hamburger Concerto is the fourth studio album by the Dutch progressive rock band Focus, released in May 1974. It peaked at No. 20 on the UK charts. The title track is based on Variations on a Theme by Haydn by Johannes Brahms. The composition also incorporates the first two verses of the Dutch Christmas carol O Kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen at around 15 minutes, and the Third Quarter chime from the Westminster Quarters is quoted in the track's final seconds. The first track is based on a Gaillarde of Joachim van den Hove of his work Delitae Musicae.
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger_Concerto)
Here is, in my opinion, the strongest album by this dutch progressive rock band. This is quite some complicated music here, however, it's pretty goofy at times too. It consists of mostly lengthy tracks void of any singing (except for the yodeling at times) and they makes use of a lot of instruments not typically found in rock music. There is a lute and a flute on the opening track which gives off a very medieval sound.
The music is quite varied offering a wide range of styles and moods. Every member contributes greatly to the final sound offering a blend of organ, piano, mellotron, flute, accordion and of course electric guitar, bass, and drums. "Birth" even makes use of a harpsichord (and it's a great song too). Of course the bulk of the album is consumed by the epic instrumental title track. The band pulls out every trick in the book on this album, which makes for a very interesting listen.

K2HD: It is possible to expand digital data from low-grade formats (32kHz) up to high-grade formats with a maximum of 192kHz/24 bits with K2HD processing. For example, when a CD master is produced from an analog master tape, everything above 20kHz is cut during CD formatting. K2HD processing reproduces the lost high-frequency components almost the same as the analog master.

Golden Earring - Switch (1975)

Year: March 1975 (CD 2001)
Label: Red Bullet (Netherlands), RB 66.207
Style: Rock, Classic Rock
Country: The Hague, Netherlands
Time: 36:08
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 253 Mb

This album has two tales to tell. A kind of Jekyll and Hyde release. The reason for this is that side one from the opener Intro/Plus Minus Absurdio to the side one closer Kill Me/ Ce soir is an absolute classic, Side two of the old vinyl shape and form, took another direction. Not unpleasant but much less progressive and proof in some respects that the album has an almost split personality..hence Switch? An indication of the direction the band were taking perhaps too. Intro.. opens the album with Floydlike synths and a great spacerock atsmosphere. It does not last long however before it breaks into the great rock tune Love is a Rodeo. It is worth mentioning the musicianship is so tightly managed on Switch that it is a pleasureable experience to hear the overall sound. The title song Switch is up next and in many respects the cleverest track played. A light if not hypnotic beat takes you on about a five minute cruise before the gloomy Kill Me plays out the side. Here Barry Hay is at his best vocally as he stretches his vocal chords to the maximum. Great percussion and sax too. Probably the most epic and conceptual songs off the album.
Side two is more of a mish mash of sounds and Tons Of Time definitely the highlight with an almost early ELO type chorus to it. The melancholic Lonesome DJ closes off the album to a mediocre end and Daddy's Gonna Save My Soul gets 10/10 for effort but it is not of the vintage fare found on the first part of Switch. Troubles and Hassles sandwiched inbetween these is a largely non descript rock tune. Overall though the album is very good but as I say an album of two sides to it. Three and a half stars and a worthwhile addition to your collection especially as 1975 was one the best years ever for progressive music. So even the good albums were great!

George Baker Selection - Paloma Blanca (1974)

Year: 1974 (CD 2003)
Label: EMI Records (Netherlands), 7243 5818482 2
Style: Folk Pop
Country: Assendelft, Netherlands
Time: 44:34
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 312 Mb

Charts: NLD #1, AUT #4, GER #1, SWE #3.
George Baker Selection was a pop-rock band from Assendelft, the Netherlands. The band is best-known for the 1969 song "Little Green Bag", the 1975 world-wide hit "Paloma Blanca" (one of the most played songs in history), and the 1985 Pan European hit "Santa Lucia by Night".
In 1968, Hans Bouwens from Wormerveer joined the band Soul Invention, a soul band that had been founded the previous year by Henk Kramer in Assendelft and played covers of songs by Otis Redding and Sam and Dave. The band consisted of Job Netten (guitar), Henk Kramer and Eric Bardoen (saxophone), Jacques Greuter (keyboard and flute), Theo Vermast and later Jan Visser (bass), and Ton Vredenburg (drums). Visser and Bouwens wrote the song "Little Greenback" [sic] in the summer of 1969. The band recorded their first album in September 1969, after which, considering this was not soul music, they changed their name to The George Baker Selection, Bouwens naming himself for a character from a detective novel. This first album, Little Green Bag (1970), produced an immediate worldwide hit: their debut single, "Little Green Bag," reached No. 16 on the Cash Box magazine chart and No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The success came as a surprise for Baker, who remembers hearing it on the radio while he was working in a lemonade factory. The single sold over one million copies globally and received a gold disc. A string of singles and albums followed; the second single, "Dear Ann," was such a success that Baker resigned from his job in the lemonade factory and became a full-time musician. Not all band members followed suit and, besides Bouwens, the Selection from mid-1970 was formed by Jan Visser, Jan Hop (drums), Jacques Greuter and George The [nl] (voice, guitar, bass). In March 1971 Jan Visser left the band to be replaced by Cor Veerman. Besides scoring hits with his own Selection, Baker wrote songs for others, including BZN, The Shoes, Andy Star, and Next One. In 1974, singer Lida Bond [nl] joined the Selection, and combining her voice with Baker's proved highly successful.
Their fifth album, Paloma Blanca, was released in 1975, and the single "Paloma Blanca" reached No. 1 on charts in several countries. It sold more than seven million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful Dutch singles ever.

Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in The Hague in 1967. They were part of the Nederbeat movement in the Netherlands. The band had a string of hit songs during the counterculture movement of the 1960s and early 1970s, including "Send Me a Postcard" and "Venus", which became their biggest hit and reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and many other countries during 1969 and 1970. The band sold 13 million records by 1973 but disbanded in 1974. After Tea - After Tea (1969)

Year: 1969 (CD ????)
Label: Fonos Records (Netherlands), LP-4035
Style: Psychedelic Rock
Country: Delft, Holland
Time: 38:00
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 228 Mb

After Tea were a pop/rock group out of Delft, Holland. The band came about in mid-1967 when three members of the Tee Set decided to split off and form their own band after a conflict with singer Peter Tetteroo and manager Theo Cuppens. Hans van Eijck (organ, composer), Polle Eduard (bass, vocals) and Ray Fenwick (guitar) soon hired Martin Hage (drums) to round out the lineup. After Tea scored a hit with their first single “Not Just A Flower In Your Hair,” a song very fitting for the “Summer of Love” and flower power craze at the time.
After the release of their debut lp, National Disaster, the band had to deal with a number of personnel changes. Fenwick, originally from England, returned home once his work permit expired and went on to join The Spencer Davis Group. He was replaced by Ferry Lever. Not long after, Eduard was arrested and sentenced to imprisonment for a brief period for possession of drugs. In his absence, he was replaced by two old acquaintances from the Nederbiet scene: singer Frans Krassenburg (who left The Golden Earring in 1967) and bassist Henk Smitskamp who had been kicked out of The Motions.
In 1968 the band made a parody of De Heikrekels, releasing it under the name “de Martino’s,” which was intended to show just how easy it was to score a hit in this genre. In May 1969 they released a collector’s item in the form of a picture disc. Partnering with a large jeweler, whenever an engagement ring was sold, the customer would receive a booklet and a copy of the band’s single “Desiree” / “The Wedding Song.”
After Tea continued to release records, but were never able to find the success they did on their first two releases. In 1969 Eijck returned to the Tee Set. He was replaced by the German Ulli Grun (formerly from The Boots), It was around this time that Ilja Gort joined as the band’s new drummer. With this lineup, After Tea decided to focus more on blues rock and LP oriented music. In 1970 Ferry Lever also switched over to the Tee Set, which has since enjoyed international success with “Ma Belle Amie.”
Eduard and Grun continued in the group Drama, and Gort went on to have a very successful career composing advertising tunes and later making wine.

Golden Earring - Together (1972)

Year: 16 June 1972 (CD 2001)
Label: Red Bullet (Netherlands), RB 66.205
Style: Rock, Classic Rock
Country: The Hague, Netherlands
Time: 39:24
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 261 Mb

Together represents an important step forward for Golden Earring. Unlike the group's previous outings, the songs on this album don't fall into strict rock or progressive categories. Instead, the group blurs these strict lines and weaves elements of each genre into a distinctive style that gives the songs their unique flavor. For instance, "Brother Wind" has the complex arrangement and length of a prog rock epic, but it moves forward with the energy and powerful riffing of a hard rock song. The group also makes a concerted effort to give each song a tight arrangement and usually more than one catchy hook. The result is the band's first truly consistent album. Driving rockers abound on Together: "Avalanche of Love" is driven by a procession of gutsy riffs that live up to the song's title, and "Buddy Joe" is a surging, dramatic adventure tale built on a singalong chorus and an insidiously catchy Indian-style guitar riff (this rousing tune has remained a popular part of the band's live set list). "Jangalene" is another highlight, a cleverly arranged tune that starts out as an acoustic blues but flowers into a full-throttle rocker midway through. The downside of Together is that, while the songs are all solid and the arrangements stay interesting, it is slightly less adventurous than previous albums. As a result, its songs never quite hit the manic highs of past classics like "Big Tree, Blue Sea" or "She Flies on Strange Wings." Despite that minor quibble, Together remains an impressive album and clearly shows off the chops and songwriting skills that would bring the group a massive worldwide success the next year with Moontan.
