Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath) - The Last In Line [Japanese Ed.] (1984)

Year: July 2, 1984 (CD Apr 25, 1991)
Label: Nippon Phonogram Co. Ltd. (Japan), PHCR-2084
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: Portsmouth, New Hampshire, U.S. (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010)
Time: 41:11
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz

It is the first Dio album to feature former Rough Cutt keyboardist Claude Schnell. It became the band's highest-charting album in both the UK and the U.S., reaching number 4 and number 23, respectively (Sacred Heart would later reach number 4 in the UK as well).
It was certified gold (500,000 units sold) by the RIAA on September 12, 1984, and was the first Dio album to be certified platinum, achieving the feat on February 3, 1987. In the UK, it attained Silver certification (60,000 units sold) by the British Phonographic Industry, achieving this in January 1986, at the same time as Holy Diver. To date, these are the only two Dio albums to be certified at least platinum.

Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) - Ward One: Along The Way (1990)

Year: 10 January 1990 (CD 1990)
Label: Chameleon Records (US), D2-74816
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: Aston, Birmingham, England (5 May 1948)
Time: 49:13
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 324 Mb

Musicians: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals 3,7); Zakk Wylde (guitar 4); Bob Daisley (bass 3,7); Jack Bruce (bass & vocals 5,10); Eric Singer (drums 1,4).
Билл сам записал партии ударных, вокал и фортепиано, но не на всех треках. To date, since leaving Black Sabbath (the first time) in 1980, Bill Ward has released precisely two full solo albums (plus the single “Straws”).   This is especially unfortunate, since both solo albums are particularly fine pieces of work.  The finest and most noteworthy was his first, Ward One: Along the Way, released a decade after his Sabbath departure.  A long time in the making doesn’t begin to sum it up.
Aside from some production issues (this album could use a nice, clear remix) this is among the best solo products issued by any ex-member of Black Sabbath, including Dio and Ozzy.  It has its Sabbathesque moments (a few crushing guitar chords, pounding drums, peacenik lyrics) but it truly is an animal of its own.   Bill Ward received a co-writing credit on every original Black Sabbath song, and it’s clear why.  The man has a vivid imagination, creating swirling soundscapes of music.  There is nothing here that is outright commercial, nothing straightforward, everything is just slightly fucked up.  I think most likely it was Bill that gave Black Sabbath its oddball experimental edge in the early days.  An edge they have lost now that they have given him the boot.
The obvious standout track is “Bombers (Can Open Bomb Bays)”, the thunderous single featuring none other than Ozzy himself on lead vocals.  But even that is strange and offputting, as the pitch of Ozzy’s voice is manipulated in the mix, giving him an otherworldly sound at times.

Dio (Rainbow, Black Sabbath) - Holy Diver [Japanese Ed.] (1983)

Year: May 25, 1983 (CD Dec 21, 1989)
Label: Mercury Records (Japan), PPD-3070
Style: Heavy Metal, Hard Rock
Country: Portsmouth, New Hampshire, U.S. (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010)
Time: 41:32
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 269 Mb

The first track, 'Stand Up and Shout', is reminiscent of 'Turn Up the Night' from Sabbath's 'Mob Rules'. Fast, hard-hitting and a great introduction. I reall enjoy this one.
Then comes the title track. Listening to it now, properly and with my full attention (and great headphones!), I realise that it's actually a good track. I still don't really feel anything with it, but I certainly enjoy it more than I thought. It still feels like a weak point of the album to me. I imagine hearing it 40 years ago upon release would have had a greater impact.
'Gypsy' - this is more like it. Lovely soaring riffs above heavy, punchy riffs - with some banshee-like vocals from Dio.
Some more fantastic vocals on 'Caught in the Middle', and I love the driving bass throughout. The chorus on this track is a highlight of the album for me. The way the guitars climb, then repeat with Dio giving it his all over the top makes the hairs stand up on my arms.
'Don't Talk to Strangers' - the intro to this reminded me of Tony Iommi's thinking behind 'Master of Reality'. By putting some quieter songs on the album, it made the heavier tracks feel heavier. I felt that on this song thanks to the intro. Not only that, but it makes for a nice respite between the metal. When the song kicks in, it makes me think of Iron Maiden. (I should mention I'm not into Maiden, I only know their hits. It feels like they've based all their songs off this track!).
'Straight Through the Heart' - monstrous intro! That riff is absolutely killer and the vocals are top-notch.
Another moment of rest during the intro of 'Invisible'. At first this one fools you into thinking a cheesy 80s ballad is coming, but that's not the case. The riffs are back, and stomping their way through the stories Dio sings to us here.
'Rainbow in the Dark' - I see this is one of Dio's most famous tracks, and I can understand why! The keys on the intro / chorus feel very 80s and that makes me think I've heard it before, but it's such a generic 80s sound it could have been from any song from the decade. I like it though, it's not over-the-top and only dates the song slightly. Riff-wise, I love this and it easily features one of Dios best vocals on the album.
I feel like 'Shame on the Night' works really well as an album-closer. The vocals are ridiculously strong on this one, the instrumental break and breakdown are excellent and the epic backing vocals towards the outro give it a medievel feeling.

Saxon - Denim And Leather (1981)

Year: 25 September 1981 (CD Oct 1987)
Label: Fame Records (UK), CD-FA 3175
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England
Time: 38:01
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 278 Mb

Produced by Nigel Thomas, Denim and Leather is less abrasive than the previous albums but still sonic meat and potatoes. It’s topped and tailed with two of the greatest songs Saxon would ever produce. Continuing their penchant for offbeat lyrical subjects and songs about forms of transport, opening track Princess of the Night tells the tale of a steam train delivering mail through ice and snow. (You’ll have to suspend your disbelief at a British train actually running during such inclement weather). It’s a darting, precision rocker with a riff you can’t believe no-one thought of before and a joyously bluesy guitar solo from Paul Quinn. Closing track Denim and Leather is a genuine and charming tribute to the metal fans that put Saxon on the map, highlighting the band’s down-to-earth attitude. It’s a stomping anthem with a huge and irresistible chorus and one of the most memorable opening lines in metal history: “Where were you in ’79 when the dam began to burst?”
After the superb opening the first side is a mixed-bag. Never Surrender is vintage Saxon and follows Princess of the Night in bruising style but the quality starts to trail off. Rough and Ready is a stodgily unconvincing hard-man boast and Play it Loud is a flat stab at a party anthem. Side 2 immediately gets the album back on track with And the Bands Played On, another of the album’s outstanding victories. Despite its musical similarity to 747 (Strangers in the Night) it has its own unique identity and appeal: a feel-good ode to the inaugural Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington. As with the title track, Saxon’s everyman charm works wonders: rather than singing about how amazing their own performance was, they celebrate the festival itself, the attending horde and name-check other bands on the bill. It’s got simple, memorable guitar riffs and Biff Byford’s breathless delivery is a joy “Will it rain, will it snow, will it shine? We don’t know” and it’s one of those classics you never tire of hearing. Midnight Rider continues the musical lap of honour, recounting the band’s early tours of the States with the rolling tempo and gear-changing chords perfectly capturing the excitement of the road trip. The album’s most ripping number, the apocalyptic Fire in the Sky, and the triumphant title-track finish the album on a high.
Along with Wheels of Steel and Strong Arm of the Law, Denim and Leather is often thought of as the third in Saxon’s “classic trilogy”. As is often the case with trilogies, the final part is the weakest of the three but it’s still a must-hear with some of the band’s most accomplished songwriting and the guitar duo of Graham Oliver/Paul Quinn at a lively peak. The highlights are magnificent metal classics and far outweighs any filler to elevate the album to star status. It was their second highest charting album in the UK so Saxon’s position at the head of the NWOBHM pack remained secure and just two years on from their debut release they already had a discography and a following worthy of celebration. The dam was well and truly burst.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave [Japanese Ed.] (1984)

Year: 3 September 1984 (CD Aug 24, 1990)
Label: Tochiba-EMI (Japan), TOCP-6341
Style: Heavy Metal, Hard Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 50:58
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 356 Mb

Released in 1984, Powerslave is Iron Maiden’s fifth studio release and vocalist Bruce Dickinson’s third outing with the band. While opinions will differ, Powerslave is arguably the strongest, early-80s, release for Maiden as The Number Of The Beast and Piece Of Mind both have exceptional songs but aren’t quite the cohesive album experience that Powerslave is. If nothing else, Powerslave is the embodiment of the heavy metal genre featuring intricate compositions and powerful performances that marked a high point in the band’s career, both in terms of their musical evolution and global popularity.
As is always the case with Iron Maiden, the album artwork is exquisite. Of course, with a keen interest in Ancient Egypt, I may be a little biased, but Powerslave doesn’t disappoint in that regard for it is as bold as the music contained within. However, when you get down to the sonic elements of Maiden’s records, while the production and overall mix are generally superb, the mastering of their albums, particularly the remastered releases, has been a point of contention amongst fans.

Iron Maiden - Killers [Japananese Ed.] (1981)

Year: 2 February 1981 (CD Mar 1, 1986)
Label: Tochiba-EMI (Japan), CP32-5107
Style: Heavy Metal, Hard Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 38:42
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 261 Mb

Released in 1981, Killers solidified Iron Maiden's status as heavy metal pioneers. Building on the foundation laid by their self-titled debut album, the band pushed their boundaries and continued to evolve by delivering a record that combined adrenaline-fueled energy with thought-provoking lyrics and some of the greatest riffs you’re ever likely to hear.
It’s also Paul Di’Anno's final album, as vocalist, with Maiden and is somewhat bittersweet for as incredible as Bruce Dickinson is on the microphone, Di’Anno’s gravelly singing style was perfect for Maiden’s musical style. That said, I can’t imagine Maiden’s albums post-Killers had Di’Anno remained a member of the band. What has remained consistent, throughout the years, is Maiden’s album artwork and Killers is one of their very best. Eddie’s demonic grin is captivating and if the music doesn’t grab you, the artwork certainly will.

Saxon - Strong Arm Of The Law [Japanese Ed.] (1980)

Year: 7 November 1980 (CD 28 Sep 1994)
Label: Tochiba-EMI (Japan), TOCP-8373
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England
Time: 37:36
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 258 Mb

While 1980’s Strong Arm Of The Law was out mere months after Wheels of Steel, Saxon seemed to be making a concentrated push into proper heavy metal territory. Its predecessor certainly showed this development with a hard rock hustle supplemented by hard-hitting rhythms and punchier songs, but the performances seem to up the intensity with an assortment of faster tempos. The opening “Heavy Metal Thunder” lives up to its title with a flurry of drums, fiery verses, and a howling chorus. Subsequent tracks don’t hit the same intensity but you’ll still get your share of blazing speeds. Tracks like “To Hell and Back Again” and “At 20,000 Feet” have the sort of fast-paced guitar gallops and double bass drums that would soon help give life to thrash’s ilk while “Taking Your Chance” has that toe-tapping briskness with a foot placed in their rock roots.
Of course, the album still has its share of mid-tempo songs but even those have a more noticeable shuffle. The title track and “Hungry Years” can feel a little drawn out but come out strong thanks to their catchy choruses and a certain spring in their steps. The closing “Dallas 1PM” also develops the contemporary narrative template last seen on “747 (Strangers In The Night),” pairing a level chug with lyrics detailing the assassination of Johnny F Kennedy. It’s kind of wild how the matter of fact presentation ends up working in its favor.
Strong Arm of the Law’s status as the middle child of the Saxon trilogy ala Motorhead’s Bomber can make it easy to overlook, but it may secretly be their strongest album. The swift turnaround worked in the band’s favor, striking while the iron was hot in terms of gaining popularity and upping the ante in terms of aggression and songwriting. It secured Saxon’s blue collar metal mastery and set them up for even greater potential on the horizon.

Saxon - Wheels Of Steel [Japanese Ed.] (1980)

Year: 3 April 1980 (CD 28 Sep 1994)
Label: Tochiba-EMI (Japan), TOCP-8372
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England
Time: 38:54
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 268 Mb

Wheels of Steel is the second studio album by English heavy metal band Saxon. Released in 1980 by Carrere Records, it was their first album to enter the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 5, and is their highest-charting album in the UK Albums Chart to date. The album eventually went on to achieve gold status in the UK.
"747 (Strangers in the Night)" is about a power cut that forced planes in New York to remain in ascent in 1965 with the power outage provoking a Scandinavian flight to detour to Kennedy airport in the dark.
The title track is featured in the video games Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned and Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony) and Brutal Legend. It has also been covered by L.A. Guns on their album Rips the Covers Off and bears a strong resemblance to the outro riff of "Rock 'n' Roll Doctor" by Black Sabbath, although according to guitarist Graham Oliver the song was actually inspired by the Ted Nugent song "Cat Scratch Fever".

May Blitz - The 2nd Of May [Japanese Ed. SHM-CD] (1971)

Year: 1971 (CD Oct 27, 2010)
Label: Universal Music (Japan), UICY-94683
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: England
Time: 38:28
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 258 Mb

MAY BLITZ were formed by vocalist/guitarist Jamie Black who recruited Tony Newman on drums, (ex Sounds Incorporated and Jeff Beck Group), and Reid Hudson (bass, vocals) in 1969. The original lineup featured bassist Terry Poole and drummer Keith Baker, from Bakerloo, but both left before recording anything for the band. Baker had a better offer from Uriah Heep, and went to record "Salisbury" with the band.
The band survived long enough to record two incredibly heavy, powerful and psychedelic albums with strong blues undertones and progressive tendencies, despite the lack of keyboards. These were released on Vertigo, who we also associate with Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep - but the music is probably heavier than either. Their style comes in somewhere around High Tide and the Pink Fairies - but these are really ballparks.
Their debut album is a must-hear for anyone curious about the development of heavy music, and features a production in which it is not only almost possible to smell the ganja smoke, but is also rich and clear enough to provide the striking dynamic contrasts the music needs, as it occasionally veers from ambience to crushing riffs in the blink of an eye. It is certainly very unpredictable, even now.
Why this artist must be listed in progarchives.com :
Because they're an overlooked progressive blues/rock/psychedelic band with a massive scarcity value, and music that is original and highly progressive to boot!

May Blitz - May Blitz [Japanese Ed. SHM-CD] (1970)

Year: 1970 (CD Oct 27, 2010)
Label: Universal Music (Japan), UICY-94682
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: England
Time: 43:12
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 272 Mb

May Blitz was a Canadian-British hard rock power trio that was active in the early 1970s.
The group was formed in 1969 by bassist Terry Poole and drummer Keith Baker, the rhythm section of the blues-rock trio Bakerloo, both of whom left the group when guitarist Clem Clempson departed to join Colosseum. Jamie Black joined the group on vocals and guitars but both Poole and Baker left the group before it recorded, Poole and Baker joining Vinegar Joe and Uriah Heep respectively. Black then added fellow Canadian Reid Hudson on bass and Tony Newman, who had played with Jeff Beck, The Hollies and Sounds Incorporated, on drums.
After playing UK pubs, the group signed with Vertigo Records (in the US they were on Paramount Records) and released their debut album in 1970. A second album followed in early 1971, but due to lack of commercial success the trio disbanded in late 1971. Black and Hudson, both originally from Canada, returned to their native country while Newman joined Three Man Army, founded and led by the Gurvitz brothers, Adrian and Paul. Newman later went on to a long career as a session drummer, including for David Bowie, Donovan, and George Harrison, and others.

Sir Lord Baltimore – Kingdom Come (1970)

Year: December 1970 (CD 2015)
Label: Lumpy Gravy Records (France), LGR 101
Style: Hard Rock, Garage Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: New York City, U.S.
Time: 38:03
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 256 Mb

Sir Lord Baltimore was an American rock and early heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York City, that was formed in 1968 and consisted of lead vocalist and drummer John Garner, guitarist Louis Dambra, and bassist Gary Justin. In a 1971 review of their debut record, Kingdom Come, Creem magazine as containing the first documented use of the term "heavy metal" to refer to a style of music. AllMusic described them as "arguably America's first bona fide heavy metal band". Sir Lord Baltimore featured a drumming lead singer, traditionally a rarity in rock and metal music.
In 2006, Garner and Dambra reunited as Sir Lord Baltimore and released a new album, Sir Lord Baltimore III Raw. The reformed band featured an overt Christian focus and lyrics, an emphasis not found in their earlier work. Justin, no longer an active musician, did not participate. Garner died on December 5, 2015, of liver failure, ending the band.
"Kingdom Come" was one of the earliest heavy metal albums and is considered an important influence on the genre. All of the songs on Kingdom Come were co-written and arranged by Mike Appel, who would later become Bruce Springsteen's manager. Co-produced by Appel and Jim Cretecos, the album was recorded at Vantone Studios in New Jersey before being mixed by Eddie Kramer and Kim King at Electric Lady Studios in New York. Kramer is well known for his work with Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and Curtis Mayfield.

Nazareth - Play 'n' The Game [Japanese Ed. 5 bonus tracks] (1976)

Year: 13 November 1976 (CD May 17, 2006)
Label: Air Mail Archive (Japan), AIRAC-1207
Style: Hard Rock, Classic Rock
Country: Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland
Time: 57:55
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 371 Mb

PLAY ‘N’ THE GAME is an enjoyable and varied collection of songs that are more upbeat and playful than their two prior releases. While there is a bit less of the plodding hard rock riffing these Scots are known for, the songs they’ve chosen here make for nice Album Rock fare. It’s a nice change after the moodier CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, which was released earlier in 1976.
The record opens with the catchy and incessant riffing of “Somebody To Roll”, which is easily a highlight. This is followed with an amusing rendition of the Butler/Leiber songDown Home Girl”, which The Rolling Stones covered back in 1965. The lyrics here hardly seem that they would be a flattering come on for any Southern girl. (“Lord I swear, the perfume you wear is made out of turnip greens” / “And every time that I kiss you girl it tastes like pork and beans”.) “Flying” is a fairly standard Nazareth ballad and probably one of the less memorable moments. The original first side of the record ends with the thumping bass groove of “Waiting For The Man”, which is a rare, but interesting funk experiment. Maybe John Deacon was listening to this bass line when he came up with "Another One Bites The Dust" a few years later? They are melodically different, but both have a similar groove.
Born To Lose” is an up-tempo hard rocker that finds the band returning to their trademark sound, if just briefly. The Joe Tex cover “I Want To (Do Everything For You)” is a slow, pulsing R&B shuffle that works surprising well for them and play live for many years. “I Don’t Want To Go On Without You” finds the band playing much in the same vein as “Love Hurts” and possibly trying to recapture that magic again. It’s a nice track, but not quite on the same level. The Beach Boys cover “Wild Honey” is a catchy pop/rock tune that works alright, but not something I’m likely to cue up on its own. Ending the album is the Nazareth penned “L. A. Girls” that is another less memorable song that tries to be catch and is punctuated with hand claps.
Nearly half of this record is cover songs, which leads me to wonder whether the band lacked their own material or just wanted to have fun with this album. I will admit that it’s that element of playfulness that I enjoy about this record, even if doesn’t rock quite as hard as RAZAMANAZ or HAIR OF THE DOG. Overall, it’s an enjoyable collection of songs, if not always a consistent one.

Ian Gillan & Tony Iommi - Who Cares [2CD] (2012)

Year: 13 July 2012 (CD Jul 13, 2012)
Label: Ear Music (Europe), 0207592ERE
Style: Hard Rock, Heavy Metal
Country: England
Time: 47:04, 48:29
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 367, 356 Mb

CD1:
01. Out of My Mind (WhoCares) – This originally appeared on the 2 track “single” CD from last year.  It’s unchanged as far as I know.  It’s a great new track from Tony & Ian.   The band on the track is stellar.  Tony Iommi, Ian Gillan, Jason Newsted, Nicko McBran, Jon Lord, & Linde Linstrom.  Makes me wish this band recorded more than just this one song.
02. Zero the Hero (Black Sabbath) – A lift from the 1983 Black Sabbath album Born Again.  A great old track.  Although if I had my choice of track to lift from the Born Again album to include, I would have picked “Hot Line”.  Oh well, still cool to see something from Born Again here.
03. Trashed (Ian Gillan) – Back in 2006, Ian Gillan put out an album called “Gillan’s Inn”, which existed to celebrate his (then) 40th anniversary in the music biz.  He re-recorded a bunch of tracks from his past.  To represent his time in Black Sabbath, he chose Trashed, and re-recorded it – with Tony Iommi on guitar.  Also on the track are Roger Glover & Ian Paice.
04. Get Away (Ian Gillan w/Michalis Rakintzis) – Originally recorded by Ian Gillan in 1993.  Even though the liner notes say who this is, I don’t know who it is!   Definitely one of the slower, more eclectic songs from the overall track listing here for sure.  Definitely not “metal” sounding at all.  Has a very catchy sounding vocal chorus, which makes the song work very well for me.
05. Slip Away (Tony Iommi w/Glenn Hughes) – This is one of the “extra” tracks from Tony’s 2005 solo album, Fused.  This one in particular was the one that was the hardest to get, as it was only available back in 2005 from the then online music retailer, real.com.  It was never available on CD anywhere – until now.   If you liked the Fused album, you should check this out for sure.
06. Don’t Hold Me Back (Gillan) – A song Ian wrote back in 1992 inbetween Deep Purple stints.  The liner notes say this was written for his wife Bron, who at the time was going to have major heart surgery.  He calls it “one of the most intimate moments of his life, expressed in song”.   Has a 90’s version of his old “shriek”, which I thought was last heard on the Born again album.  :)
07. She Thinks It’s a Crime (Ian Gillan) – This track comes from Ian’s 2009 solo album, “One Eye to Morocco”.  This track in particular was originally released on the 7 inch vinyl version ONLY.  First time on a CD anywhere.  The track doesn’t jump out at me at all musically.  Pretty bland track –  not one of my favorites on this collection.
08. Easy Come, Easy Go (Repo Depo) – This track comes from the project Ian was working on right before he rejoined Deep Purple for the “Battle Rages On” album.  Repo Depo was the name of the band.  It has never been released anywhere before in any format.  According to the liner notes, the only known copy was on a monitor cassette tape Ian had – it was brought forward and remixed in 2012 for this collection.  Nice track.  The guitar sound reminds me a bit of Tony Iommi in places.
09. Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple) – This version comes from the live Deep Purple album, “Live at the Royal Albert Hall”, and Ian shares lead vocal duties on this version with Ronnie James Dio.   Interesting hearing these two former Black Sabbath vocalists sing together on the Deep Purple Chestnut.
