Not
to be confused with the well-intentioned but still incomplete career
retrospective of the late '90s, this international release focused
exclusively on the three albums (two studio and one live) issued during
the period stated in its title. At the time, Genesis' three-man lineup
was finally coming into their own as a viable commercial entity, having
survived the seemingly insurmountable challenge of losing guitarist
Steve Hackett and especially singer Peter Gabriel. But after a couple of
solid but plainly tentative efforts in 1978's And Then There Were Three
and 1980's Duke, which saw the trio cautiously transitioning out of
their overblown progressive rock past with chart-oriented songs like
"Follow You, Follow Me," "Misunderstanding," and "Turn It on Again" (all
featured here in their Three Sides Live versions), the "new" Genesis
truly came into their own with 1981's excellent Abacab. The key tracks
from this album and its eponymous 1983 successor provide the bulk of the
highlights here, including "No Reply at All," "Man on the Corner,"
"Mama," and "That's All," to name but a few. Also on hand is a live
version of the classic lineup's "Firth of Fifth" and the 1982 single
"Paperlate." All of which makes for a strange but cohesive snapshot
moment from the band's storied and eclectic career.
