Savoy
Brown, a group founded by guitarist Kim Simmonds has been around with
numerous personnel changes since the Mid-1960s and is still – some 55
years later – on the road today.
Simmonds’ Savoy Brown is regarded as
a mainstay in the development of British Blues Rock along with the
Rolling Stones, Cream, etc. The group never made waves in the UK but
gained a major underground following in the US and still maintains a
solid cult status. Simmonds learned to play guitar listening to his
brother’s Blues collection and evolved into a master guitarist with an
unmistakable signature style.
“Getting To The Point” is fundamental
Blues; however, Youlden didn’t attempt to mimic Black Bluesmen but
delivered the lyrics with subtle intensity and a cadence that stamped
each track with his unique vocal style. This album was the perfect
prequel to the next studio album, “Raw Sienna” released in 1970.
“Raw
Sienna” is a masterpiece produced and arranged by Simmonds and Youlden
and a universe away from “Getting to the Point.” There are dynamic big
band horn and string arrangements by bass player Tony Stevens seamlessly
incorporated into some tunes. The material is thematic and follows a
lyrical stream of consciousness – an unfolding, reflective narrative
about life on the shadowy fringes of society. Everything about “Raw
Sienna” is accomplished in musicianship, production, and the penning of
cohesive lyrics.
My favorite cut is the fatalistic tune, “Needle and Spoon,” a song about heroin addiction.
“Don’t need no women don’t need no wine
‘Cause life is sweet when you hit the mainline
I sleep with the sun and I rise with the moon
And I feel alright with my needle and spoon
I feel alright with my needle and spoon.”
The
lyrics on “Raw Sienna” aren’t merely motheaten cliches hung onto to the
pentatonic scale; they are well-crafted vignettes about life. The album
has depth and well-worth listening to.
