Band
leader Ritchie Blackmore retained only singer Ronnie James Dio from the
previous album line-up, and recruited drummer Cozy Powell, bassist
Jimmy Bain and keyboard player Tony Carey to complete the new roster.
Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album was overseen by rock
producer and engineer Martin Birch. The band was originally billed as
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in the US, but was titled simply Rainbow on
this release. In 1996 Cozy Powell told Record Collector magazine that
much of the album was recorded in one or two takes, with some subsequent
overdubs, which explains why no alternate or demo versions exist, just
the original or rough mixes.
The album showpiece, the
eight-minute-and-26-second track "Stargazer", features the Munich
Philharmonic Orchestra, and originally had a keyboard intro as evidenced
on the 2011 Deluxe Edition's "Rough Mix" version.
Few of the album
tracks made it into the band's live set: "Stargazer" and "Do You Close
Your Eyes", written prior to the inaugural US tour in late 1975,
featured in all the 1975 and 1976 shows, while "A Light in the Black"
was dropped early in the 1976 tour, although it was reintroduced into
the set during the Japanese dates. "Starstruck" was played in shortened
form, usually as part of "Man on the Silver Mountain".

Outside
of the Re-Mastered LA-Mix version of this Album, and the Munich 77
concert, I know of few CDs/-recordings where the audio is so brilliantly
great. The best thing about the Deluxe versions of these albums, is that
it is the next best thing to getting the Japanese pressings. The German
discs that I have bought so far have packaging made in other parts of
the EU, but the discs are the key usually. The presentation has great
packaging, pictures, and a superb booklet.
The New York Mix is not
the greatest all-round mix, but if you want a mix that centres on the
guitar on vocals, then the NY mix works. The best all round mix is the
LA mix since it has the NY sound with the
depth of the Bass into the mix. The Rough mix on disc two comes very close to being as good as the LA mix, but
fails on some level. All in all these RAINBOW
discs are great.
The
LA Mix makes a great Car CD for those who need that in their travels.
Just a minor note; The sounds you can hear developing in RAINBOW were
starting to come around in the latter part of DEEP PURPLE, and as the
Booklet notes, Blackmore learning the Cello helped him expand his
composing skills and find a sound for some of his tonal variations that
were changing. Ever the temperamental artist, it was probably almost
inevitable that Blackmore wind up playing in his current band,
BLACKMORES NIGHT which has some skillful guitar work as well as
brilliant ideas.
