An early example of the ‘supergroup’, Humble Pie was formed in April 1969 by Peter Frampton (22 April 1950, Beckenham, Kent, England; guitar/vocals, ex-Herd), Steve Marriott (b. 30 January 1947, London, England, d. 20 April 1991, Essex, England; guitar/vocals, ex-Small Faces) and Greg Ridley (b. 23 October 1947, Carlisle, Cumberland, England, d. 19 November 2003, Alicante, Spain; bass, ex-Spooky Tooth). Drummer Jerry Shirley (b. 4 February 1952, Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, England) completed the original line-up which had a UK Top 5 hit with its debut release, ‘Natural Born Bugie’. The quartet’s first two albums blended the single’s hard rock style with several acoustic tracks. Having failed to consolidate their early success, Humble Pie abandoned the latter, pastoral direction, precipitating Frampton’s departure. He embarked on a prosperous solo career in October 1971, while his former colleagues, now bolstered by former Colosseum guitarist Dave Clempson (b. 5 September 1949, Tamworth, Staffordshire, England), concentrated on wooing US audiences. This period was best captured on Smokin’, the band’s highest-ranking UK chart album. Humble Pie latterly ran out of inspiration and, unable to escape a musical rut, broke up in March 1975.
Marriott formed Steve Marriott’s All Stars, which latterly included both Clempson and Ridley, while Shirley joined a new venture, Natural Gas. Marriott died in 1991, following a fire at his Essex home. Shirley and Ridley reconvened in 2002 with ex-Jeff Beck Group and Streetwalkers guitarist Bob Tench and Dave ‘Bucket’ Colwell (guitar) for Back On Track. Ridley died the following November after contracting pneumonia.
