Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery And Imagination [Deluxe Ed. 2CD] (1976)

Year: 25 June 1976 (CD 2007)
Label: Universal Music (US), B0009122-02
Style: Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Pop Rock
Country: London, England
Time: 57:04, 63:13
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 360, 375 Mb

Originally simply called The Alan Parsons Project, the album was successful enough to achieve gold status. The identity of The Alan Parsons Project as a group was cemented on the second album, I Robot, in 1977.
In 1987, Parsons completely remixed the album, including additional keyboard and guitar passages and narration (by Orson Welles) as well as updating the production style to include heavy reverb and the gated reverb snare drum sound, which was popular in the 1980s. He also made the end of side A segue into the start of side B due to the remix of the album being released when CD's were commercially available, thus no need to stop playback to change sides. The CD notes that Welles never met Parsons or Eric Woolfson, but sent a tape to them of the performance shortly after the album was manufactured in 1976.
The first passage narrated by Welles on the 1987 remix (which comes before the first track, "A Dream Within a Dream") is sourced from an obscure nonfiction piece by Poe – No XVI of his Marginalia (from 1845 to 1849 Edgar Allan Poe titled some of his reflections and fragmentary material "Marginalia.") The second passage Welles reads (which comes before "The Fall of the House of Usher" (Prelude), seems to be a partial paraphrase or composite from nonfiction by Poe, chiefly from a collection of poems titled "Poems of Youth" by Poe (contained in "Introduction to Poems – 1831" in a section titled "Letter to Mr. B-----------"; the "Shadows of shadows passing" part of the quote comes from the Marginalia.
In 2007, a Deluxe Edition released by Universal Music included both the 1976 and the 1987 versions remastered by Alan Parsons during 2006 with eight additional bonus tracks.

Bee Gees - Spirits Having Flown (1979)

Year: 5 February 1979 (CD 2006)
Label: Reprise Records (US), R2 77607
Style: Funk, Soul, Pop, Disco
Country: Manchester, England
Time: 45:33
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz

"The record the world's been waiting for," reads an ad for Spirits Having Flown, and that's not just hype, since the Bee Gees' new album represents a deliberate attempt to fashion a "global" pop. Instead of extending the airy pop-disco of Saturday Night Fever, the Brothers Gibb have consolidated several styles, only one of which is disco, to make slower, more elaborate music. Miami Blue-Eyed Soul Meets Europop in Ecumenical Heaven might be an apt subtitle. Though impressively produced, Spirits Having Flown isn't nearly as powerful as the crux of Saturday Night Fever, and its failures suggest that the group's brilliant fusion of adolescent love songs and disco for the 1977 soundtrack LP was at least partly accidental.
From the beginning, the Bee Gees' mating of pop and R&B was shaky. True, the key cuts on the transitional Main Course, for which producer Arif Mardin taught the trio the rhythmic basics, were landmarks. But the following disc, Children of the World, on which the Gibbs and coproducers Albhy Galuten and Karl Richardson toughened up the style, was less satisfying. There, the effort seemed forced, and the combination of harder rhythms and a much grainier sound created an abrasively shrill and somewhat cheesy blue-eyed soul that redeemed itself only once, in the poppers-in-the-fun-house smash, "You Should Be Dancing." Coming after this letdown album, the gorgeous and surprising Saturday Night Fever songs (from the same production team) elegantly underlined both the strength and delicacy of the special chemistry. These made-to-order movie tunes had such a magical flow and simplicity that, in one stroke, a universal dance music was born. Not since the heyday of Glenn Miller, forty years earlier, had the dreamy and aggressive impulses of pop meshed so seamlessly to stamp an era.

Elton John - Leather Jackets (1986)

Year: November 3, 1986 (CD 1986)
Label: Rocket Records (West Germany), 830 487-2
Style: Rock, Pop Rock
Country: Middlesex, England (March 25, 1947)
Time: 46:15
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 275 Mb

Charts: UK #24,    AUS #4, CAN #38, GER #21, NLD #34, NOR #12, NZ #34, SWE #31, US #91. UK: Gold.
In 2001, Elton regarded "Heartache All Over the World" as the worst song he had ever recorded, calling it "pretty insubstantial"; in 2006, he would declare Jackets his least favourite of all his albums, saying "Gus Dudgeon did his best but you can't work with a loony."
He would also call its biker-inspired cover "very butch but a total disaster. I was not a well budgie, I was married and it was just one bag of coke after another."
(In spite of this, lyricist Bernie Taupin believes The Big Picture deserves the honour of worst album.)
In 2000, Gus Dudgeon said: "There was a chance he could polish himself off. He'd go out and do some coke and it'd be all over his mouth, his nose would be running and I'd go: 'Oh God, this is just awful'."
John has also stated in his 2019 autobiography Me that "it was about as close to an unmitigated disaster than anything I've ever released" and "overall, Leather Jackets had four legs, a tail, and barked if a postman came to the door".
"Heartache All Over the World" was the only single to achieve chart success in the US, though it failed to crack the top 50. "Slow Rivers" is a collaboration with Cliff Richard that was released as a single in the UK. Cher collaborated with "Lady Choc Ice" (actually John himself) to write "Don't Trust That Woman". Roger Taylor and John Deacon of Queen play drums and bass guitar respectively on the track "Angeline"; songwriting credit is shared with backup singer Alan Carvell, who composed the "oh-oh-oh's" that can be heard at the beginning and end of the track.

Van Halen - When It's Love [Japan Ed. Single] (1988)

Style: Hard Rock
Country: Pasadena, California, U.S.
Time: 12:41
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 86 Mb

Charts: US (Billboard Mainstream Rock) #1, US (Billboard Hot 100) #5, AUS #23, CAN #21, IRE #23, UK #28.
"When It's Love" is a power ballad by American rock band Van Halen. It was released in 1988 as the second single from their eighth studio album OU812. It was the most popular song from that album, hitting #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts and #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song has been a live performance staple since it was released in 1988. The song was also included in the set list for the band's ill-fated 1998 tour with Gary Cherone. Eddie Van Halen has stated that this particular guitar solo is a nod to Eric Clapton. It became their 3rd and last top 10 hit.
It was featured on a VH1 special, The Greatest: 25 Greatest Power Ballads, where it was ranked as the 24th greatest power ballad of all time.

Genesis - Live (1973)

Year: 20 July 1973 (CD 1985)
Label: Charisma Records (Germany), CLACD 1
Style: Progressive Rock, Art Rock, Pop Rock
Country: Surrey, England
Time: 46:55
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 258 Mb

Genesis Live is the first live album from the English rock band GenesisInitially recorded for radio broadcast on the American rock program King Biscuit Flower Hour, the album is formed from the recordings of shows at Free Trade Hall, Manchester and De Montfort Hall, Leicester in February 1973 during the band's tour supporting their fourth studio album Foxtrot (1972).
Genesis Live is the band's first album to enter the top 10 in the UK, reaching No. 9. Following its US release in 1974, it peaked at No. 105.
Rolling Stone gave the album a brief but positive review, commenting that "this album goes a long way toward capturing the gripping power and mysticism that has many fans acclaiming Genesis as 'the greatest live band ever'".
A retrospective review by AllMusic was also resoundingly positive. They remarked "it's doubtful that anyone ever got a richer sound out of a Mellotron on-stage than Tony Banks does on this album, and Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins' playing is all quite amazing as a whole unit, holding together some very complex music in a live setting". They judged all the recordings to be far superior to their studio originals.

David Lee Roth (Van Halen) - Greatest Hits (2013)

Year: November 19, 2013 (CD November 19, 2013)
Label: Friday Music (US), FRM-72941
Style: Hard Rock, Rock
Country: Bloomington, Indiana, U.S. (October 10, 1954)
Time: 58:45
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 412 Mb

If you’re familiar with David Lee Roth but don’t own any as of yet, then your next question is likely to be, “Is this a good place to start?”  Sure, why not?  Dave’s latest “hits” compilation, simply called Greatest Hits (his last one was called The Best), does the trick in most regards.  It even includes Dave’s entire first solo EP Crazy From the Heat albeit not in the original running order.  (1. “Easy Street” 2. “Just A Gigolo” 3. “California Girls” 4. “Coconut Groove” in case you feel like re-arranging the tracks as originally released.)  “Easy Street” is an Edgar Winter Group original, and Dave has Edgar guest on his version too.
Some of the best songs are distilled from Eat ‘Em and Smile, but that’s a 5/5 star album that needs to be owned on its own regardless.   From Skyscraper is “Just Like Paradise” and “Hot Dog and a Shake”, but not the single “Stand Up” interestingly enough.   Present are the three singles from A Little Ain’t Enough: the bluesy “Tell the Truth,” the title track and the swanky “Sensible Shoes”.   Three tracks are included from Your Filthy Little Mouth, only one of which is a head-scratcher (the reggae infused “No Big ‘Ting”) but by-and-large this an acceptable slice of Warner Brothers era David Lee Roth.

Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) - The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking (1984)

Year: 30 April 1984 (CD 2000)
Label: Columbia Records (Europe), 507981 2
Style: Rock, Prog Rock
Country: Great Bookham, England (6 September 1943)
Time: 42:14
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 227 Mb

The concept was originally envisioned by Waters in 1977 and refined in the early 1980s. In its completed form, it rotates around a man's scattered thoughts during his midlife crisis. These are explored on a dream journey during which he takes a road trip through California, commits adultery with a hitchhiker he picks up along the way, attempts to reconcile with his wife by moving to the wilderness, and finally ends up alone but with greater insight into a common human compassion. Along the way he also faces other fears and paranoia.
The entire story is framed in real time as a fitful dream taking place in the early morning hours of 4:30:18 am to 5:12:32 am on an unspecified day. At the end of the dream, the man wakes up lonely and contrite and turns to his real wife for comfort, presumably having processed his crisis.
In July 1978, Waters presented the concepts and played demos of The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking as well as what was then titled Bricks in the Wall, which became The Wall, to his bandmates in the group Pink Floyd, asking them to decide which should be a group album, and which should be his solo album. After a long debate, they decided that they preferred the concept of Bricks in the Wall, even though their manager at the time, Steve O'Rourke, thought that Pros and Cons was a better-sounding concept, and David Gilmour deemed Pros and Cons stronger musically.
Waters declared:
Well, the idea for the album came concurrently with the idea for The Wall - the basis of the idea. I wrote both pieces at roughly the same time. And in fact, I made demo tapes of them both, and in fact presented both demo tapes to the rest of the Floyd, and said "Look, I'm going to do one of these as a solo project and we'll do one as a band album, and you can choose." So, this was the one that was left over. Um...I mean, it's developed an awful lot since then, I think.

The London Symphony Orchestra - Plays The Music Of Jethro Tull (1985)

Year: 15 February 1985 (CD January 1986)
Label: Ariola Records (Germany), 610227-222
Style: Pop, Modern Classical
Country: London, Britannia
Time: 42:55
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 253 Mb

I was loaned the cassette, in the late '80s, by a shipmate who knew that I liked classical music. I knew who Jethro Tull was and had heard of Ian Anderson but I told him I wasn't interested. He said to try it anyway and I did. I was, metaphorically, knocked out of my chair. I listened to it many times before finally returning it. I just couldn't believe that rock music could be made to sound like anything other than loud, discordant noise. Was I wrong!!! I wore out my own cassette, so when I found the cd, I had to have it. I have listened to other groups (The Beatles, The Doors, et. al.) in a symphonic format. Most, I didn't like- they still sounded too rock[y] and not enough symphonic[y]. But this album is, not only a classic, but in a class by itself.
(amazon.com/Classic-Case-Symphony-Orchestra-Featuring/dp/B000003FOE) Review by Frenchy
I'm a huge Ian Anderson classical fan. Excellent flutist. His live stuff is far superior. The whole album seems to be in the same key. Kind of lackluster. But I still love his classical works with the London Philharmonic, just look for live recordings.

Pink Floyd - The Endless River (2014)

Year: 7 November 2014 (CD Nov 7, 2014)
Label: Columbia Records (US), 88875007882
Style: Pop, Ambient, Instrumental
Country: London, England
Time: 53:02
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 300 Mb

It was the third Pink Floyd album recorded under the leadership of guitarist David Gilmour after the departure of bassist Roger Waters in 1985, and the first following the death of keyboardist Richard Wright in 2008, who appears posthumously. Gilmour said it will be the final Pink Floyd album.
The Endless River is a double-album that comprises mainly instrumental and ambient music composed on material recorded during sessions for the previous Pink Floyd album, The Division Bell (1994). Additional material was recorded in 2013 and 2014 on Gilmour's Astoria boat studio and in Medina Studios in Hove, England. It was produced by Gilmour, Youth, Andy Jackson and Phil Manzanera. Only one track, "Louder than Words", has lead vocals. After the death of longtime Pink Floyd artist Storm Thorgerson in 2013, the cover was created by artist Ahmed Emad Eldin, design company Stylorouge and Aubrey Powell, co-founder of Thorgerson's design company Hipgnosis.
The Endless River was promoted with the "Louder than Words" single and artwork installations in cities around the world. It became the most pre-ordered album of all time on Amazon UK and debuted at number one in several countries. The vinyl edition was the fastest-selling UK vinyl release since 1997. The album received mixed reviews: some critics praised the nostalgic mood, while others found it unambitious or meandering.

Ian Gillan - Live In Nottingham (1990)

Year: 24 August 1990 (CD 2002)
Label: Classic Rock Productions (Europe), CRP1047
Style: Hard Rock
Country: London, England (19 August 1945)
Time: 50:24
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 339 Mb

This one was recorded live in 1990, just after the release of "Naked Thunder" LP, Gillan's one of the best work. Generally I don't really like Gillan's album, for their weak sound, but this concert is very good. The musicians are not beginners, like Tommy Eyre on keyboards, and ex-Alex Harvey rhythm section, Chris Glen and Ted McKenna. The guitarist is Steve Morris from Ian's previous band: Garth Rockett & the Moonshiners. Very tight band.
A rollicking start with "Gut Reaction", then comes a Purple classic "Demon's Eye". Very good version, Gillan is in top form. Here's another Purple classic, "When a Blind Man Cries", where Eyre keyboard sound is a bit strange, but Morris plays excellent. And here's the early Purple shows' closing number, Little Richard's "Lucille" and the inevitable "Smoke on the Water". Doesn't he bore it?
Recommended to any Purple fans! Good Hard-Rock with some bluesy taste.

David Lee Roth (Van Halen) - A Little Ain't Enough [Japan Ed] (1991)

Year: January 15, 1991 (CD Feb 25, 1991)
Label: Warner Bros. Records (Japan), WPCP-4020
Style: Hard Rock, Rock
Country: Bloomington, Indiana, U.S. (October 10, 1954)
Time: 53:10
Format: Flac Tracks 16/44,1 kHz
Size: 388 Mb

Charts: US #18, AUS #26, Can #21, Fin #1, GE #12, NL #30, NO #9, JP #17, SWE #11, SWI #5, UK #4. Canada: Gold, US: Gold, UK: Silver.
Produced by Bob Rock, the album featured the lead guitar work of Jason Becker, a then up-and-coming guitarist who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's disease) a week after joining the band. He managed to finish recording the album, but was unable to tour in support of the album, as his condition left him with little strength in his hands.
The album marked the beginning of Roth's commercial decline, given the drop-off in sales from his prior two albums. During the year of the album's release, the Seattle grunge movement was beginning a sea change in rock, and Roth's brand of glam metal was considered, by mainstream audiences, obsolete. Although the album went out of print on the Warner Bros. label in 1996, it was reissued (in remastered form) in 2007 through the Friday Music label.
A music video for the title track, "A Lil' Ain't Enough", received significant play on MTV.
The song "Hammerhead Shark" is a cover and partial rewrite of the song by the same title from the 1990 album Walking on a Wire by Lowen & Navarro.
